As day 2 of my Mexican adventure unfolds, I am excited to uncover the lavish experiences awaiting at Tulum VTR Club Riviera, courtesy of the dynamic ChagodTour company. This company, born in Montego Bay just three years ago, has swiftly become a key player in the Latin American and Caribbean markets, drawing us closer to our Spanish-speaking neighbours.
Saturday morning bathes Tulum in a golden glow, setting the stage for a day of exploration. Energised and eager, I rise from a restful slumber in my ocean-view haven—no phone, no television, just the rhythmic waves as my soundtrack. Perfect. With no fixed itinerary, I embrace the spontaneous rhythm of my fellow travel influencers.
Wandering down to the dining area for breakfast, I encountered a group of industrious individuals setting up. Little did I know, these petite figures hold a rich cultural history, At my 5ft 3 inches my stature towers over them. Curious about the breakfast schedule, I inquired about the serving time. From 7 am, they reply, so my Jamaica time puts me an hour ahead—an accidental time traveller.
Embracing the extra hour, I embark on a leisurely stroll through the expansive property. Multiple swimming pools beckon and the rhythmic embrace of the ocean evokes memories of the North Coast back home. The sunrise casts its golden hues, and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore soothes my soul.
Joining me for breakfast is Julio, my touring partner/interpreter who opted for a quiet night over the allure of clubbing. After breakfast, I meet Johnni Nessi, the articulate hotel manager. In flawless English, he shares insights into the ongoing refurbishment of the hotel, currently operating at 50 per cent occupancy. A diverse clientele flocks in from Canada, the USA, and various Spanish-speaking Caribbean countries. Johnni Nessi emphasises the need for Caribbean neighbours to explore their regional counterparts, debunking the language barrier as a feeble excuse. "Spanish should be the second language of the region," he asserts.
However, the pinnacle of Tulum's allure, Johnni reveals, is the famed Coco Bongo show—a spectacle drawing visitors from far and wide. Drawing parallels with Cuba's Tropicana, I express my enthusiasm, stating that a visit to Cuba without experiencing Tropicana feels incomplete. Intrigued, he describes Coco Bongo as five hours of pulsating music and dance that promises to elevate anyone from their seat. "Tell me what you think after tonight," he challenges, setting the stage for an evening of cultural immersion and sensory delights.
