Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the Government has managed the affairs of the economy and the country well so that the country is now benefiting.
Speaking today (January 16, 2024) at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Spanish Town hospital in St. Catherine, Prime Minister Holness highlighted that by employing practical fiscal management skills over the years the government can now deliver a caring economy with major upgrades and renovations to hospitals and clinics across the island.
Importantly, the Prime Minister noted that his administration takes seriously, the promises and plans presented to the people of Jamaica and delivers on them.
The Prime Minister stated: "One thing you can get from this government is that we are very practical. I am not going to come here and tell you glowing rhetoric pie-in-the-sky vision. I'm going to tell you what is practical, what is realistic and what we are going to achieve. We told you we were going to do this. During the pandemic, we had a massive presentation showing all the hospitals that we plan to build. We deliver on what we say that we are going to do. We don’t come with the fancy talk.”
As the economy’s resilience improves, the Prime Minister asserted that the increases in output will be spent on healthcare along with other critical sectors such as education, sanitation, elderly care, and public transportation. Prime Minister Holness pointed to the link between productivity, a caring economy, peace and prosperity.
Prime Minister Holness said, “I want every Jamaican to understand the connection between productivity and the caring economy. Everyone’s productivity must increase and one of the best ways, the experts will tell you, to increase the productivity of a nation is to increase the health care of a nation. If you reduce the number of sick days that people have at work, immediately you'll see an increase in your GDP. If you reduce the level of obesity in society, immediately you'll see an increase in productivity.”
The Prime Minister explained that as the country moves towards becoming a Republic it is important that the public understands that the future of the nation depends on the productivity level of the citizens which will generate revenue to build a caring economy.
