Advance Mortgage Payment - A Way To Help The Elderly

We know about the abhorrent nature of the apartheid system which existed in South Africa and the segregation laws in the United States of America. 

In Jamaica, there is segregation based on class.  Scamming and the involvement of people with prohibitive drugs have made some people now rub shoulders with the so-called high society people. There is now a new type of discrimination based on age in Jamaica.

There is little or no respect for the elderly in Jamaica. We need to look at how we treat the elderly. The following are some of the challenges the elderly face in Jamaica.

• Some elderly people have assets such as a home but do not earn an income and, they do not get a reasonable pension which can satisfy their basic needs.
• The increased use of computer programmes that are not user-friendly to the elderly.
• The dramatic increases in the cost of living since 1972. 
• Inaccessibility of the elderly to higher education because of their age.
• The difficulty of getting a mortgage to purchase a home.
• High cost of medical care.
• Affordability of healthy foods.
• Lack of housing for the elderly who do not own a home.
• Some elderly persons have no pension benefits because they spend a significant part of their lives working on a contractual basis.
• Inability to take care of themselves.
• A financial system which does not seem to recognise the challenges that the elderly face.

Over the next few weeks, I will look at some solutions and I hope that my supporters will come up with their own solutions.

Years ago, the elderly did not have to worry about getting old because they had plenty of children who took care of their needs.  My family members normally live 80 years and beyond. I remember my beautiful Aunt Mala who lived in Jackson Town. Aunt Mala died a few years ago. My mother has passed 90 years and is still going.

One way we can help the elderly have a system where the elderly can enter into an Advance Mortgage Payment with those who want to purchase their property. Simply put, one could agree to make monthly payments to a senior citizen until they die or the house is paid for.
