UPDATE FROM DPP OFFICE REGARDING TOSHYNA PATTERSON AND SARAYAH PAULWELL KIDNAPPING AND MURDER

PRESS-RELEASE 

 

FIFTH PERSON CHARGED IN THE KIDNAPPING AND MURDER OF TOSHYNA

PATTERSON AND SARAYAH PAULWELL ON THE 9^TH DAY OF SEPTEMBER 2023

 

Background

1.     On the 9^th day of September, 2023, Toshyna Patterson and her ten (10) months old daughter, Sarayah Paulwell were kidnapped and murdered. On the 15^th day of November 2023 Mr. Richard Brown pleaded guilty to the Kidnapping and Murder (2 counts) and was sentenced to thirty (30) years imprisonment. Mr. Roshane Miller also pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Kidnap (2 counts) and Accessory Before the Fact to Murder (2 counts) and was sentenced to seven (7) years and ten (10) months imprisonment. Ms. Leoda Bradshaw was also charged for Capital Murder and Conspiracy to Kidnap (2 counts). Mr. Roland Balfour was charged for Accessory Before the Fact to Kidnapping (2 counts) and Accessory Before the Fact to Murder (2 counts). Ms. Bradshaw and Mr. Balfour are due back before The Home Circuit Court in March 2024. Case number 1

 

2.     On the 12^th day of January, 2024, a fifth person, Mr. Bjon Black was charged with the kidnapping and murder of Toshyna Patterson and Sarayah Paulwell. Mr. Bjon Black appeared before the Home Circuit Court on the 17^th day of January 2024 before The Honourable Justice Mr. Dale. Palmer on a Voluntary Bill of Indictment proffered by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions outlining eight (8) counts. 

 

The charges are as follows;

 

•        Conspiracy to Kidnap Toshyna Patterson on diverse days between the 6^th and 9^th day of September 2023. 

•        Conspiracy to Kidnap Sarayah Paulwell on diverse days between the 6^th and 9^th day of September 2023.

•        Conspiracy to Murder Toshyna Patterson on diverse days between the 6^th and 9^th day of September 2023.

•        Conspiracy to Murder Sarayah Paulwell on diverse days between the 6^th and 9^th day of September 2023.

•        Kidnapping of Toshyna Patterson on the 9^th day of September 2023.

•        Kidnapping of Sarayah Paulwell on the 9^th day of September 2023.

•        Murder of Toshyna Patterson on the 9^th day of September 2023.

•        Murder of Sarayah Paulwell on the 9^th day of September 2023.

 

3.     Mr. Bjon Black will be eventually joined on an indictment with the case of Rex v Leoda Bradshaw and Roland Balfour.

Next Court Date 

4. Mr. Bjon Black’s next court date will be on the 9^th day of February 2024 in the Home Circuit Court. On that date, the Crown will give the Court an update on the state of the file and the accused is also to advise the Court on whether there has been a settlement of legal representation.

 

Case number 2

5.     On December 20, 2023, Mr. Bjon Black was charged by the Police for offences under the new Firearms Act and appeared before the High Court Division of the Gun Court on the 23^rd day of January 2024. He is charged on an indictment containing three (3) counts. 

Count I - Possession of Prohibited Weapon

Count II - Unauthorised Possession of Ammunition  

Count III - Dealing in Prohibited Weapon

 

6.     His next court date for this matter will be on the 13^th day of February 2024 in the Gun Court. Legal representation is to be settled for Mr. Black.
