AFTERNOON THOUGHTS DECLUTTERING FOR A LIGHTER LIFE

What is it about our tendency to accumulate possessions we neither need nor use? Items that gather dust, taking up space while others could benefit from them? There's a profound irony in our attachment to material things, especially when there are people out there whose lives could be enriched by what we consider excess.

Some may label this perspective as pessimistic, but I see it as pragmatic. Acknowledging the inevitable end of our journey isn't negativity; it's realism. After all, no one leaves this world alive and kicking. We all meet our end, whether through illness or tragedy; it's the natural order of things, and we must accept it as part of life.

That's why I've adopted the practice of decluttering. The act of letting go not only frees physical space but also brings a sense of lightness and clarity. Witnessing the gratitude of those who receive what I no longer need reinforces the value of sharing and the importance of mindful consumption.

I'm inspired by an elderly friend who leads by example, generously passing on items she knows will be appreciated and utilised. Her wisdom reminds me of the beauty in simplicity and the joy of giving. So, I choose to surround myself with those from whom I can learn, cherishing the invaluable lessons they impart with every interaction.

Editor's Note
Recently a supporter of Bark Di Trute and SpotOn With Vernon Derby, a Jamaican living in Florida, had a change of plan for his wife's birthday party. He asked his guests to walk with their cash and their chequebooks to make donations to the Violet Edwards scholarship. He felt he needed nothing more in life so he decided to share the gifts. Two more UWI students will be able to attend the UWI due to the generosity of diaspora members.
