The Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr. |
The Following is a Release from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, April 13, 2024.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security last Thursday conducted a Farmwork Orientation Session for elected officials and constituency representatives, as part of a series of strategic initiatives being undertaken by the Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr, furthering his commitment to overhaul the Overseas Employment Programme (OEP), more popularly known as the Farmwork programme.
Further to the Member of Parliament (MP) sensitization session held earlier this year at the Conference Centre, Downtown, Charles Jr. had promised a fulsome upgrading of the programme was underway with a targeted focus on improved worker selection, the expansion of opportunities for more farmwork candidates, strengthening relations with employers and an improved orientation and onboarding process.
The Farmwork Orientation Session is one of several strategies being employed by the Minister to improve the candidate selection process to ensure more fit for purpose persons are selected for the role.
Thursday's session was attended by representatives who are the persons with primary responsibility for the genesis of the farmwork selection process. MP’s and others in attendance were informed of the refreshed selection criteria for candidates, provided guidance on the renewed selection process, advised of the concerns surrounding the urgency to select the right candidates for the role to ensure our candidates remain competitive in a highly saturated labour market and educated on the most pressing employer concerns and proposed solutions.
Special focus was placed on teaching attendees how to choose the most suitable personnel and identifying characteristics and traits to look for in selecting successful candidates.
Minister Charles Jr. whilst speaking in Parliament recently, reiterated his previous commitment to improving and expanding the programme, building the trust and cooperation of workers and the long-term commitment of employers, and strengthening and fostering new relations to secure additional opportunities for Jamaican farmworkers - important elements for the development and further growth of the programme.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security remains committed to improving service delivery to both workers and employers through the Ministry and the Liaison Service and strengthening of the capacity of the programme to satisfy the needs of workers and employers.

Are we planning ahead for the repetitive jobs AI is prepared or well suited to do.
ReplyDeleteAnother area we need to plan for is the call centre businesses that are so repetitive that Chatbot and AI can/will take over.
While going after low level enslavement kinds of jobs on farms and in hotels cleaning or cooking.
Government needs to plan on up skilling/equipping citizens in preparation for a higher technical or technological world that is here.
How are we going to be more productive going forward that includes or involves all our citizens.
Our Society's human replacement rate now at 1.6 when the standard is 2.1could plummet more putting the country in a labour shortage and crisis.
Longterm holistic thinking is needed.
Away with short term SOE kind of application as Jamaica itself is now facing a shortage of appropriate labour in many areas.
We should now be encouraging procreation.
How about a "FIRST 3 FOR FREE" Pprogramme spearheaded by the Family Planning Agency.
Firstv3 For Free would guarantee free Ed up to tertiary combined with Free health care, transportation,
