Dr. Winsome Halliman |
The three Council Members including the chair Dr Winsome Halliman, have resigned from the Mona High School Board. Mona High is located in Kingston. The Chairman in an email sent to the Minister of Education and Youth gave lack of transparency in the school as the reason for the resignations.
I understand that all is not well at the school. It is expected that the Ministry of Education and Youth will act soon to deal with the challenges at this school.

But it's the Board that should be ensuring transparency and accountability is in place by the establishment and adhering to those outlined by the Ministry of Education.
ReplyDeleteWe need to hear from those members who resigned if they took appropriate action without getting any results.
ReplyDeleteWhats happening in schools these days re Boards vs Principals vs Ministry.
ReplyDeletePeople must understand that principals are always on spot and must make decisions on spot.
Boards meet much later than incidents and Heroes Circle much later.
The Principal is on the field of play as referee and must determine what colour card to issue, red yellow, allow the game to continue or call off the game.
No so at all. There such a thing as the The Education Regulations which outlines how things are to be done. Many board members are not trained and some Principals take it up on themselves to be judge, jury and executioner.
DeleteI strongly feel that some Board Members act on feelings, they do not follow-up with Principals to have a better understanding of happenings and are therefore incable of making Trusted decisions. It cannot be.that the blame game falls on the Principals.
ReplyDeleteDo a survey among schools to find out whe was the last time a board did the Performance Appraisal for the Principal . The findings would be astounding.
DeleteIt is the principal and the bursar who must inform the Board about activities at tge school. No board member has an obligation to set up an office in the school to monitor the activities of the school. The principal is the chief officer of the school, and though he may delegate responsibilities, he/she has the ultimate responsibility for good governance of the school.
ReplyDeleteThe Board cannot rely on information garnered in the public space, but must get information from the responsible officer. The principal is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school and has the responsibility to provide the board with the relevant information. No Board can micro manage the principal and should never be blamed for the management of any school. The board is merely providing oversight and advice in many instances after the fact.
Hence my withdrawal of my son fairly quickly from the school. I as a parent sensed it and met upon frustration too often vs solutions. Thank God for Himself.
ReplyDeleteOk😁

ReplyDeleteI found it funny that readers should ask someone else to investigate this matter. It has already been investigated and brought to the attention of the authorities. It is now being made public. Those who have additional information can send this information to 876 816-5261.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the role of the school's education officer in all of this? He/she should not be left out.
