Transport Sector Leaders Give Positions on Strike

Egeton Newman

Today some transport operators withdrew their services.  This had a limited impact on the travelling public. Based on feedback that I have been having, some operators have received a high number of traffic tickets and they want to escape the penalty of their licences being suspended.

The service withdrawal on Tuesday, June 11, should have less impact on the commuting public. Commuters are advised to leave their homes earlier than usual to get to work on time.

I was unable to get a statement from Minister  Vaz.

Please add your comments about some transport operators withdrawing their services today.

We are so accustomed to the disorder that we don't even recognise it anymore. Go visit another country where they respect order and decency & see if what you're proposing takes place. We are so blind to it that we don't make the connection between disorder & crime or the wanton deaths on our roads.

I have been saying for years that we need to take the jing-bangs out of the transportation sector. All they do is hustle on the roads and act as if the roads belong to them. They are utterly selfish. Back in my day of riding the buses, the conductors were stink and paedophiles who were notorious for having relationships with school girls. You use to have drivers slam into people at the bus stop cause they're racing to pick up passengers. I had a coworker whose 12 year old daughter died cause of an incident like this. They used to stuff the buses like the slave ship on the Middle Passage. For so long, we Jamaicans SUFFERED at the hands of these lawless people. I used to think then that the government had little regard for its people when they give them that kind of system & call it public transportation.

What needs to happen is that bus drivers and conductors should be made employees working for a few transportation owners (about 10-15 covering the entire island) and to receive a set salary with benefits such as health insurance, uniform and vacation. Then they would be less likely to behave like hustlers on the roads. No amount of penalty is going to bring about order unless the system is structured.

My suggestion is really meant for non-JUTC for bus drivers & taxi drivers as well.
