Press Release From The JPS - 2024/07/13
[KINGSTON: Saturday, July 13, 8:00pm] A section of the aged underground electrical network supplying residents of Hope Pastures has failed, leaving several households without power. The areas affected are Hope Boulevard, Glendon Circle, Margaret Close, Hart Boulevard, Forsythe Drive, Jobank Close and Terry Close. Some customers connected to the overhead network have been affected, as they are supplied by the underground primary circuit.
JPS is taking steps to fully transfer some of the affected premises to its overhead network. However, this transition will take about 48 hours, as a new line will need to be put in place. The company has indicated that a handful of premises will not be able to benefit immediately from this transition to overhead, as they will need to first reconfigure their wiring to facilitate connection. JPS will be engaging the affected residents to further explain the requirements.
Work is already in progress, as the company aims to expedite the connection of supply to the impacted residents.

What a disaster for those people.
ReplyDeleteYet I hear people saying if full time now JPS puts wire underground, this is not good news put on top of the problems they facing already
ReplyDeleteUnderground wiring is better. The problem is that JPS has NOT maintained the system. We live in a hurricane-prone country. Underground wiring is better. Besides, can you imagine how cheaper electricity would be for many people cause others can't connect to the system to steal electricity? Right now, we are all paying for people who not only steal electricity but waste it cause they are not paying for it. They have A/C in every room and leave their A/C running even when they are not at home.
DeleteJPS is pushing overhead power distribution.
ReplyDeleteThis is so outdated with modern urban amenities.
With technology such as GIS, GNSS, and GPR, etc. This is a reality in many modern countries such as the Netherlands.
Jamaica should be no different.
We already are held hostage by hurricane for half of the year. Earthquakes and other risks.
Strategically, this should be the direction the JPS should be going as it is not only more cost effective in the long run but it also is more safe and significantly reduces theft form the grid.
The problem is not the underground cables, it’s the lack of regular maintenance of the infrastructure structure. Just image you buy a new car but never maintain it, you know the end result.
