These days, Covid-19 is rarely mentioned, though it hasn't disappeared. Many of the crucial hygiene practices emphasized during the pandemic are no longer widely observed. Maintaining a certain distance from others, a key practice during the height of Covid-19, is often ignored. For instance, people frequently stand close together while checking out at supermarkets.
Here are some reasons to keep others at a distance while conducting transactions, like at a supermarket cashier:
- Virus Transmission: Viruses, including Covid-19 and its variants, are easily spread through coughing, sneezing, and even talking. The closer you are to someone who is infected, the higher your risk of catching the virus. Additionally, the emerging mpox virus is another concern.
- Credit and Debit Card Security: People nearby can potentially see or even capture your credit or debit card transactions using small cameras. Additionally, some have devices that can steal your card information if they are close enough.
- Card Theft: If you accidentally leave your credit or debit card at the cashier, a nearby customer could take it without you noticing.
- Cell Phone Theft: Many of us place our cell phones on the counter while paying. A customer standing too close might take the opportunity to steal your phone.
- Item Mix-Ups: When people are too close at the checkout, your purchased items can get mixed up with someone else's, leading to the loss of your items.
Shoppers Fair - Washington Boulevard |
I shop at Shoppers Fair Supermarket on Washington Boulevard, and there is one cashier who seems to have an issue with me asking another customer to wait until I finish checking out. I've reported this to her superiors and hope it will be addressed.
When you visit an ATM, bank, supermarket, or anywhere else to conduct business, it's a private matter. You should not allow another customer to invade your space and privacy. It's important for your health, confidentiality and security.
The limited space for checking out goods at Hilo in Liguanea makes it difficult for more than one customer to be at the cashier simultaneously. This setup should be considered by other supermarkets as well.
