Monica Brown, Former BOJ Executive and Students Loan Bureau's Head, Is Smashing at 70!

When I was asked to be the MC at the 70th birthday Party for Monica Brown, the former head of the Students Loan Bureau, I was reluctant. I felt that I did not have enough energy to take that on. The party was on Saturday, September 14, at the Tera Nova Hotel in Kingston.

When I arrived, guests were milling around outside on the terrace, sipping their drinks and enjoying hors d'oeuvres. I was seeing a different and beautiful Jamaica. Family members were greeting one another. They came from rural and urban areas in Jamaica, as well as from the US, Canada and other countries. It was a feeling of love all around.

Professional photographers took pictures and captured this closely-knit group of family and friends. The event planner Terri had everything in place and I was ready to get this function started on time.

The room was well laid out with tables covered with blue tablecloths. The chairs were covered with a white material wrapped with a blue material forming a bow to the back.

All was ready for a sumptuous meal to titillate the palette.  There was wine after dinner and champagne flowed as family and friends gave toasts to the honoured lady. Many were shocked at her look which belied her age. She wore a blue dress which sparkled in the light and clung closely to her body revealing her amazing shape.  She was the envy of many young ladies that night.

It was an evening when family members showered her with love and thanked her for supporting and assisting with their development. Many of Monica's siblings' children now professionals, expressed their appreciation to a wonderful aunt. One of her sisters thanked her for caring for her children while she was overseas.

The most touching event was her mother who flew in from the USA to be there speaking about her daughter. She expressed herself emotionally in soft tones about her daughter but the strength of her words was not lost as Monica hugged her. The high point of the evening was to see Monica's two sons dancing with her. They both looked like her boyfriends.

To top the evening there was top-class entertainment. Everton Pessoa's singing delighted the audience. Everton the true professional performer had the audience eating out of his hands as he just glided from table to table delivering his melodious notes. Marie Myrie was a winner. She knows how to work with the audience and she found an outstanding male singer in the audience who did not know he could sing that well. Christopher McDonald, musician and singer was the one-man band who provided great music for the artistes and he also entertained us.

It was a wonderful evening that highlighted the importance of a family working together and supporting one another. Yes, I was slightly hesitant to act as MC but I eventually found mi ackee at Monica Browns Big Birthday Bash and Boonononus party. It was indeed a memorable occasion.
