Erroneous Gleaner Editorial for October 20, 2024?

MP Everald Warmington

Some people do not appreciate MP Everald Warmington due to his fiery and sometimes abrasive approach. I have had personal challenges with the man but I will not dismiss his points simply because of his personality. The world is made up of all types. The Gleaner's Editorial dated Sunday, October 20, was blinded by Warmington's personality. The editorial was not objective in addressing the MP's points.

MP Warmington's points were possibly influenced by his party colour but we must look beyond that. The MP is calling for a general audit of the Integrity Commission, This is different from the audited annual financial statements Justice Panton spoke about in a press release. A general audit report looks at the operations, the systems in place, and the level of accountability, within the organization. The audit report would indicate if the entity is adhering to the laws and government guidelines. The document would also contain recommendations

There are experienced auditors, accountants, and retired public servants in Jamaica - the nation needs to hear from you on this matter. Integrity is not just the purview of an entity but the responsibility of all. People are being bombarded with incorrect information, We need the truth.

Other Information:

Note:

The Integrity Chairman should stop making insulting comments about parliamentarians. This will negatively impact his credibility. It's politically divisive. In future no figures should be given for the number of parliamentarians being investigated. This will lead to speculations and will implicate and undermine the whole parliament

  1. One of the things I like about him is he speaks what's on his mind, the other is he takes care of the people in his constituency.

  2. If they really want a system audit etc, as you have mentioned, they donot need to look far. That is the work of the Internal Auditors under which that entity would falls.

  4. We ought to strongly reject the calls for an audit of the IC at this time. First let us review and address the current reports then we audit the IC with the objective of strengthening it - more resources and stronger supporting laws. The onus must be on the holders of unexplained wealth / income to fully explained how they got it.

    1. The IC is about Integrity and it should lead from the front. It has to do it's complete audit and require other government entitles to follow.

  7. There is nothing wrong with doing a performance audit of the IC as suggested by Warmy. However, is the motive to improve its performance for the delivery of its mandate or is it to nit-pick in a political way on any weakness identified? If political nit picking is the motive, then once again, we prove that we have lost our way. The purpose is to improve performance to reduce corruption.

    1. His motive not important. If it must audit they must be audited.

    2. They are audited yearly. Is there a reaskn to believe this is insufficient or is this call from him just political noise is the question.

  8. The IC is audited yearly and the audit is submitted with their reports. Who audits Gordon House? Who audits the expenditures given to parliamentarians?

    1. I am not aware of anyone stating that the IC has been audited. Parliamentaries do not get funds to spent. Funds are paid by government workers.

  9. There are so many government entities that have not been audited for years. If Warmy was serious about spending he would focus on those. This is all about the pressure on Holness.
