Good night Mr. Derby, I have not been to Emancipation Park in a while and just went for a visit. I notice that New Kingston has become a ghost town compared to first time when Knutsford Blvd was a swinging Hip Strip.
It is now dead, dark and dirty. So many businesses have closed. Night clubs, restaurants, sports bars, miniature golf and amusement park, jerk joint, golf academy. Only tonight I learnt that the high end restaurant Buzo closes tomorrow.
The park itself has no fountain and the little pools are dry. Even the amphitheatre is torn. Can we not maintain anything?
Outside the park, vendors line the fence selling popcorn etc with small generators powering their machines. They provide a needed service and have been there for years. However, can the government not have the vision to provide a clean, dignified area where they can be licensed to rent/lease and operate from?
Lastly, walking in darkness along the litter strewn path to g et to my vehicle was uncomfortable. For years, that stretch has been in darkness and no security is posted nearby.
How do our politicians travel to so many countries, see clean organized spaces and not feel embarrassed about how we treat our own? The moment you come off the plane and enter NMIA with its outdated and small immigration and customs area you feel the poverty strangling you. It is very depressing. Emancipation Park is advertised as a part of Kingston tourism. Mr. Bartlett and the Mayor need to come up with an effective plan, implement it and hold people accountable.
I am a proud Jamaican but often I am not proud of Jamaicans. We can be so much better.

I expected Buzo to close because what they sell is not worth the USD cost? In a country where the currency is JMD? Garbage is a hallmark of Kingston, especially the market district downtown.
ReplyDeleteGarbage and undisciplined vendors are taking over the country, seems no one cares about cleanliness anymore, Major Swaby is trying with Downtown , but let's see, with people not been held accountable and you just go in and clean up after them, they don't care.
ReplyDeleteThe bigger question is who are we as a people???? Every country I have been I dont see guards in the parks you run you walk you cycle you picnic in peace.
ReplyDeleteClean up and leave the space as you found it.
What is our problem? Same thing at home .We used to be clean and upstanding.
Now government is our mother father spouse .
Cant help but think media play a large part of this robbing people of self reliance and a sense of pride in achieving the a better life for themselves.
Omg did not go that side when I came down but this is not good.
ReplyDeleteIf we do not take a hold NOW we'll be living in regret for years to come!
ReplyDeletePeople need to be forced to keep the country clean, serve community service picking up garbage until we understand our responsibility. If we need to use the JDF personnel to enforce, so be it!! We need to bite that bullet now!
I do not know where to lay blame or point fingers, I just know we're literally at the end of our corruption, indiscipline, filthiness, lewdness, criminality rope.
We, Jamaicans are a Great People, we are Unique, we are Trendsetters, we Must Stand Up for what is Right and Best for our country. The politicians need to fall in line with our demands!!
