PM Dr. Andrew Holness Tours Portmore Resilience Park

Press Release From Office of the Prime Minister:

Portmore Resilience Park Becomes Reality: Government Delivers on Its Commitment
“The Portmore Resilience Park is no longer a promise; it’s no longer an idea. It is now coming nicely into a reality.”- Prime Minister Holness

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling commitments and delivering for the people of Jamaica.

Speaking yesterday (February 28) during a tour of the construction site for the Portmore Resilience Park, Prime Minister Holness said what was once a concept is now becoming a reality, demonstrating the government’s position of action over words.

“The Portmore Resilience Park is no longer a promise; it’s no longer an idea. It is now coming nicely into a reality; my record as Prime Minister has been to take almost all uncompleted, talked-about ideas and make the greatest effort to convert them into reality,” stated Prime Minister Holness.

The Resilience Park, which is scheduled to be complete by September this year, will be a modern, multifunctional public space designed to enhance the quality of life for Portmore residents. Features of the park will include a jogging trail with elevation for added intensity, a central pavilion, concession facilities, a covered hall for sports such as netball, basketball, and table tennis, outdoor courts, and beautifully landscaped green spaces with flowers and grass. Additionally, provisions for small businesses and a block of restrooms will ensure convenience for the residents of Portmore.

The Prime Minister says the park is the latest in the government’s ongoing plan, through the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), to build a park in every parish for Jamaicans to have green, recreational spaces where they can enjoy quality time outdoors.

Prime Minister Holness emphasized the importance of community stewardship in maintaining the park’s value and beauty.

“The Urban Development Corporation will be responsible for maintenance, but no matter how many wardens are there or how much we clean, if persons using the park discard waste improperly, it will take away from the park’s value. I implore everyone to care for the park as if it is your own front yard,” the Prime Minister urged.

This park will be called the Resilience Park as an embodiment of the values and ethos Jamaica holds dear.

“Resilience is a national value that we want to cultivate in all Jamaicans. Our ability to withstand adversity and recover from challenges defines us, and this park symbolizes that strength,” Prime Minister Holness added.

As the government continues to transform ambitious ideas into impactful developments, Prime Minister Holness noted that the Portmore Resilience Park stands as a testament to the administration’s commitment to action. The Prime Minister looks forward to its official opening and encourages all Jamaicans to embrace and enjoy this vibrant public space.

  1. Let me congratulate the people of Jamaica and the Holness Government for that resilience park.
I ask though that the maintenance of the Emancipation Park be upgraded as it is almost 2 years now the jogging track is in total disrepair.
The external lighting and the internet services need servicing also.
One has to be careful not to fall as I have seen many such falls and I have myself stumbled.
A change from these plastic tile like blocks should be totally replaced with a continuous surface like at the Stadium, JC,Calabar etc
These parks enhance relaxation, fitness, health ,reducing stress levels, saving lives and Foreign exchange for medicines and hospital.beds.

    1. I agree with Micspen on the changes/upgrades for Emancipation Park. In addition to what you've outlined, I would also suggest that the empty plot of land across the road be prepped for additional parking and concession stands to accommodate the vendors at the entrance. In almost every location in JA, you have vendors making the place look unsightly and if we are allowing them ply their wares, then we need to construct decent facilities (with bathrooms) for them so we don't have chaos.

  3. Hopefully it will be a full reality by the proposed completion date. It would also be great if more towns around the country had a similar park to not only enhance its beauty but for relaxation, recreational activities and for socializing.

    1. Every parish needs a Harmony,Resilient or Emancipation park.

As a matter of fact no community or housing scheme should be passed without a park for the residents.

I recall EPG Seaga outlining the Tivoli Community concept which he had hoped could be replicated elsewhere.

That was the most holistic/ complete community with housing, school, park, community centre, church, health centre, music and arts centre playing fields etc in Jamaica.

Someone more familiar could outline the facts better.
