Port Royal, the sunken city. |
Today is the anniversary of the 1692 earthquake, which struck Port Royal, on June 7, 1692. It is reported that during excavation in the area, a stopped pocket watch was found in the harbour in 1959, and it indicated that the earthquake occurred at about 1143 EST.
Port Royal was known to be a rich city and also as the wickedest city in the world. It was home for many of the privateers and pirates operating on the Caribbean Sea.
Most of the city ended up below sea level, and approximately 2000 people died because of the earthquake and the tsunami which followed. More people died subsequently due to illness and injuries.
The history site at https://www.history.com/ in an article reports that The HMS Swan was carried from the harbour and it landed on top of a building on the island. It became a place of refuge for many survivors.
Literally all the buildings were uninhabitable, and the bodies from the cemetery floated in the water along with those who had just died from the earthquake. Spanish Town was also demolished. The surviving Port Royal residents moved to Kingston to build that city. The 1692 earthquake should never be forgotten because it can happen in Jamaica again. The question is, how prepared are we? Many are not even aware of the significance of this day in our history.
That was the end of the wickedest city in the world controlled by pirates.

Why can’t we use this sunken city as a tourist attraction? We could offer scuba dives or maybe not, as I heard that there are a lot of sharks in that area, due to its proximity to the shipping lanes. We could do a submarine dive, like the ones in the Bahamas or in Hawaii
