Bark Di Trute Supporters' Views on the Jamaican Senate

Gordon House

Near the end 2024, our Bark Di Trute readers were asked several questions about the power and actions of the senate. We got 54 responses from all parishes. My apologies for not posting the results before.

Crimevis everybody's business

We have sat back lazily and fail to modernize our constitution, England have long close such similar loopholes. If the the Jamaican senate an unelected body with some politicians the electorate refuse over ride the duly elected members God help us.

we need a government like the one in elsalvdore no senators will be killed in the flare up of this violent and furthermore they are not duley elected by the people this need to be changed

I think the constitution should change

The Government through the SOEs, has turned Jamaica into military state which is a temporary "pause" and not even a solution to the crime situation. They need a crime plan.
Further, their solution only allows a migration of the Criminals and violence producers from the areas/Parishes in which the SOEs are, to other peaceful Parishes.

Years ago, the PNP had indicated that the Crime situation required "Divine Intervention" and they were ridiculed for it.!!!

Blame the constitution not the Opposition. What happens when the shoe is on the other foot. Where is the Crime plan from 2016?

Constitutionally, yes. Checks and balances on any administration is a good thing.

The elected members should be the one who have the last say

No one who is not elected by the people should have the power to Block a decision that the overwhelming majority of the people want and which is in the best interest of the nation at this particular moment in time When! When persons show you who they are believe them!

Forgive the carvers of the constitution, they thought that the senators would be good people serving the interest of the country.

There should be alternative suggestions if these motions are blocked

Democracy requires that the majority rules. The only unelected persons that should go against the decision of the highest Court, elected parliament, should be The Judiciary . This should be on matters of constitution.

NIDs should be compulsory.

SOE will not solve the crime problem. We will be victimized if this continues. Curfews would have been more effective and community policing.

We have to do something about the crime we will use this till another plan is worked out. The two parties must try to work together or we are going nowhere forward

Since the SOE came about in 2018, the government should by now come up with a credible and respectable crime plan for Jamaica. The SOE is is not crime plan. It is illegally used to fight crime and it is also abused by this present government.Honestly I think that the government should stop use the same methods of bullyism and one upmanship like criminals to treat with this monster called crime. They should find a comfortable seat and sit down properly with the opposition PNP. On the other hand, the PNP should write to the government and made it public, telling them of thier concerns with how they are treat prior to any SOE , theclegality, ligitimact and the uncomstitutionality therein upon the people in Jamaica. Also, put suggestions and ideas forward to the government as to how they can help treat with crime, other than using the State of Emergency Powers that in most cases infringed on the constitutional right of the citizens in Jamaica.

The government needs to seriously address the matter of community policing instead of fighting crime. There is the need for a change in the culture of the communities seeing the police as an enemy instead of a protector. I strongly believe that the time has come for every school to have at least one uniformed police officer place there permanently instead of security guards. This tome would encourage the children to grow up seeing the police as a friend instead of a law enforcer (enemy). It will also foster a better relationship among children police and community and tjus have us preventing crime instead of fighting crime.

Put the whole country under the SOEs.The police shortage could be sorted out by drafting cadets and selected members of the 80,000 security guard force + volunteers among them retired Army and JDF personell. In order to have effective policing we need a minimum of 30,000 JCF members.Deepen and widen the intelligence networks among the people eg Taximan, prostitutes,
bartenders so that coverage is guaranteed.3 million people shouldn't be too difficult to police it's not 30 million. If no SOE my proposal with some supervisory and logistics fine-tuning can more than work.
Another idea is an incentivizes collaboration with the 80,000 strong private security guard companies can be worked out.
This controversial proposal of identifying "Ethical Dons" many of whom operate as
de-facto district constables to enforce criminal code of conducts and ethical criminal behaviour. For example though shall not kill, rape or otherwise maim during robberies.Rape and robberies of poor, elders, women and children is punishable by "death".Swift express murder trials and also swift executions for murder. Our protected and secure Parliamentarians are pussyfooting around what the people really want to see.In fact selective SOEs are side shows that aids the dispersal of criminals to every crevice and corner of Jamaica. This started in earnest during and after the "Tivoli Incursion".The way forward is to cleanse and secure the low crime areas that has been an error for decades that needs correcting and needs no SOE media fanfare, law creation orgies or countless media exaltations. While the SOE discussion distraction continues go quietly and implement this plan most criminals will be caught on the back foot.Put in a pretty girls intelligence unit giving them incentives of $100,000 for every criminal they aided their removal or elimination from society.

crime is out of control therefore whatever can be done to save any Jamaican life is a huge plus

Have a Crime Plan

Just continue with the enhanced security measures as is necessary but avoid the name (SOE) State of Emergency. It seems to me that it's the name that is the problem, not the presence and operations of the security forces.

Strengthen laws dealing with criminal.

The State of Emergency is only a plaster for the sore. As a people we need to start looking at the deeper issues plaguing Jamaica. Parenting or lack of is our biggest problem. Lawlessness is being made in the home and punitive measures like State of Emergency is just a temporary fix. We need permanent fixtures. Punitive measures are not working for these young people commuting crime, they don’t want to live, don’t care to live and don’t care whether others live or die either. They are unloved, abandoned, neglected, abused and what they get, they are going to pass on to the rest of society. We need a national security plan which would include a crime plan.

State of emergency just not working, house to house serch should be conducted.

I think the ruling party should do what is best for the country they have the power to do it

Start locking up those political figures who enable criminals.

The government needs to show they are in charge and make decisions in the interest of the country especially at this crucial time with murder rate out of control!

Corruption begins from the head. Why else would it be so rampant?

If the state of emergency is the one to help with

the crime for the time being I think it should happen until they find a solution

Use every legal tool possible to reduce the crime rate.

None at the moment

Increase the number of police

The government MUST call it again and again after every 14 days as the law prescribe and use it to measure the effectiveness. After 14 days take one day break then call it again and go get the hoodlums. I rest my case.

The opposition should put people first and give their solution to crime so the JLP can implement it in full or in part. How can they sleep at nights if they have the answer and watch people die because they are waiting to win an election to implement their great crime plan? We are being terrorized while they have the answer.
I am not a party loyalist. I vote for any party I believe in at that moment and right now the opposition has me hissing my teeth with disappointment. Shame on you Mr. Golding and Mr. Bunting. Mr. Golding, you come across as very negative and unreasonable about everything. Mr. Bunting, you were utterly confused when you were in charge of crime so stop acting so insensitive now!!!!

Government have a whole lot a social intervention and program in various ministry that can help these young people leaving schools to think and see a different way of live but are has a nation ready for this the leaders have the different ministry of to lead with a mission statement and motivate workers has to we're they would like to go inorder for them to follow we need not just say we are targeting Youngs we need really targets them and big up to the program in the army that is a real example we need fi start district by district who is ready for that challenge too much red tape for real people to get help a lot a people live on land with no papers no one to trun to no land paper for the poorer set a people if as a farmer you can get help from path you need land titles and guest what only the people that don't need the help have that which young people a go the some a these real problems into Jamaica society and see a easier way in scamming and don't take it start to change the young mine set by giving them hope we need hope and realistic dreams has to we're we are going in this country all is not lost

The opposition seems confused and put party before country.
I believe that the state of emergency should be used initially to curb the crime rate especially murders, then deal with the shortage of police in the different parishes so that we can take back every town and village out of the control of the criminal elements that now control them.

Have mobile joint security forces in nooks and crannies. Have them doing spotchecks daily or every other day.In the most violent plagued places they can be at a central point.but overall have them on beat and foot AND WELL ARMED.

Double the Police force in number and intel

Crime in jamaica should be our number one priority

Until the country can afford to upgrade underprivileged communities, provide social amenities to areas which spawn crime why not use short term measures to keep crime down.

The House & Senate arrangement is fine. The State of Emergency should be extended but the opposition is correct - too much deoendency on SOE. We must go after the suplliers of weapons. We need stringent governing rules - see Singapore. We gave been governing poorly. Adopting too much of USA policies.

There are 2 separate voting mechanisms in our Govt in an effort to achieve objectivity and balance in our decision making. We might not always agree (which we do not) but the system has its purpose.

In this case, if the Govt can impose another period of SOE, then let it so do, however, the point being made by the Senate is that other methods of tackling the Godzilla of crime facing each and every Jamaican need to be employed.

Just for the holiday season a new state if emergency should be implemented but I think the Opposition and the Government should by now see that they need to join hands come together to fight crime it's not a sit back oppose situation right now.

THE CONSTITUTION NEEDS TO BE AMENDED

Bring out the JDF in all hotspot

I think parliment should have total say over all legislation to govern the country we the people should be the one to override such

No bail should be given to the known crime producers.

Hang them

I am tired of them all these criminals killing our citizens I want back hanging

Saving lives is more important than the rights of criminals who use their colleagues to intimidate and eliminate; and their ill gotten gains to hire top lawyers

1. Sustained and improved community policing to build trust.
2. Registration of disengaged youths.
3. Train and retraining persons to be better parents.
4. Pump monies into early and primary education.
5. Work closely with community leaders to establish a mentoring programme.
6. Promote informer culture through educational programmes.
7. Ensure that communities have access to basic social and physical infrastructure.
8. Stop politicising crime fighting
9. Promote appropriate local governance, land administration and fused it with technological best practices.
10. Ensure that there is a clear separation of powers in government.
11. Provide educational scholarships.

The government is the body that must act. Opposition can be opposed but do not hinder the government taking action.

I have made the suggestion all ready. Put Camara in the JPS street light that can pick up these young men whenever they doing the ordering of guns or planning to kill someone or even placing Drones in certain locations. They will not even know what hit them. Then when they hear the evil that they are planning them just come pick them up. We have the what it takes to clean up our country. Look at the amount of guns still in our communities and up to now the government is not not using magnetic sensors to get rid of guns out of the communities. These are the instruments they use to find the bombs and stop them exploding. We can bring back Jamaica to peace and safety. It can be done in Jesus mighty name.

Target the use of the SOE to those communities that are problematic; not the whole parish. In this way the people in these communities will become inconvenienced and frustrated and not others. Thus they will begin to shone the criminals and no longer offer cover for them, so they'll be caught.
