Geography and Geology Department, UWI |
A student was held up today at gunpoint at the University of the West Indies in front of the Geography and Geology department. The hoodlum took the student's phone, which was being used by the student to capture research information. This will no doubt have an impact on the student's ability to meet requirements for gaining a degree.
It was reported to me that the private security on campus turned up 45 minutes after the incident. The campus police, I was told, were very early on the scene.
Crime has been a major challenge at the UWI campus. The management has not been able to deal effectively with the problem.
I am not a security expert, but I would suggest that the UWI management consider the following:
- Surveillance cameras should be strategically installed on the campus.
- These cameras should be monitored by departmental personnel and also by those responsible for security on the campus.
- Students should be able to subscribe to an emergency alarm system which would be triggered by gadgets in the possession of students.
- When the alarm is triggered, all entrances and exits should be secured.
- Enrol students in a campus security force that would assist in ensuring that the campus is a safe place.
- These students involved with security would be assigned to work in specific areas at specific times as security officers.
If you are a student or a staff member and you have ideas for improving the security at the UWI, add these ideas as comments below. If you are aware of other incidents of crime on the campus, please send me a WhatsApp message to (876) 816-5261.

Maas Vernon remember the crime industry is at least 10% of GDP ie a US$2.9billion lucrative and fast growing.
ReplyDeleteNo place or person is immune from being a victim in this country. It was good however that there were no injuries or deaths involved here in this case.
Criminals are therefore to be found from the pulpit to the poor house.
The Criminal Executive Officers (CEOs)/DONs could be also enrolled at the UWI.
Carrying robberies then blend right back into the general population helping to search for the alleged Criminal.
At this point just flood every nook and cranny of the campus with cameras monitored for rapid response .
Years gone by UWI was one of the safest environments in Jamaica .Now it's contaminated with all kinds of runagate knaves, vagabonds v and scoundrels.
My God!!!
DeleteVery good suggestions Mr Derby... Especially the one about closing the campus gates if the alarm is sounded. More details will need to be worked out. Blessings πͺπΎπ
ReplyDeleteI am sure there are enough smart people at the UWI who can work out the details.
DeleteRe; Item 5 suggestion :
ReplyDeleteWhat would be the compensation for that student acting as a security officer, if he or she accosts a perpetrator and is hurt ? The UWI needs to employ more and better security officers. These students are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to be able to attend the university on campus. They should be made to feel safe there
Right now they are students on the campus. there are horrible stories about crime on the campus. Who compensates the students now? Your point is no different from saying there are policemen so we should not take care of our society.
DeleteOmg it is not safe they need to put in place better systems
