First, the sign is headed 'Visiting Hours,' and I wondered why it did not say, 'Visiting Minutes.' I prefer the heading 'Visiting Times'. Why pluralize 'Mondays - Saturdays'? Is it incorrect to say, 'Monday - Saturday'?
The next line states 11:00am - 12:00pm. I usually write 11:00 am. Note the space between the time and am. It seems to be the accepted thing to say 12:00 am and 12:00 pm, but it can be confusing. "Am" means "ante meridiem," and "pm" means "post meridiem." That is the time before noon and the time after noon. It therefore seems illogical to say 12:00 pm. 12:00 is noon and not after noon. I remember years ago, people would say 12 noon or 12 midnight and not 12:00 am nor 12:00 pm.
If my memory serves me right, there was a flight that left early in the morning from the Norman Manley International Airport. People were told to arrive at the airport at 12 am, only to find out that the flight had left earlier in the day. That is why it is better to use the 24-hour clock. Using the 24-hour clock, 1200 is 12:00 noon, and 12:00 midnight is 0000 hours. 1300 hours is 1:00 pm.
The instruction following 'Please Note:' on the notice is confusing unless you interpret what it says. Instructions ought to be clear, and one should not have to interpret instructions unless the instructions are in a foreign language.
Then again, this is the UWI hospital, where brilliant people are managing the place. Who am I to question these things? It would be interesting to know what you think. Add your comments to the blog.

ReplyDeleteSir Vernon you and l are living in "modern"times. Why would be so learned to want to introduced backwards thinking to the UWI you are out of your place bro...But let's see if your reminder of the correct ion will be accepted.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually noon and midnight and midday. 12 noon, 12 midnight and 12 midday are all redundant.
