Last Living Cayman Islands National Hero Dies

Francine Jackson

Cayman national hero Francine Jackson, a leading campaigner for women’s rights and a marriage celebrant who performed almost 4,000 ceremonies, has passed away at the age of 97. She was honoured with National Hero status last year. An early pioneer who battled for women’s voting rights and the right to stand for office.

In 1948, Jackson and a group of women in George Town presented a petition for women’s voting rights to lawmakers. It was dismissed.

In 1957, she and three Bodden Town women submitted a similar petition for women’s voting rights and the right to stand for office. This time it was successful.

She voted for the first time in the 1959 election and, with several other women dubbed “the Fabulous Four," later stood for office—although all were defeated at the polls.
