Gordon House
The strange headline from the Gleaner dated July 16, 2026, blasts, "Acting Appointment Leaves Gordon House Tense as Staff Goes On Leave. " I cannot understand why this story gets elevated to a major story in a national newspaper, which has global reach.
This is the making of a storm in a teacup. First, it is the prerogative of the management of Gordon House to determine appointments on a temporary or permanent basis. The main functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These are not staff functions.
One of the challenges of many modern organisations is to maintain tradition rather than grasping the opportunities that are available daily. These organizations will remain stagnant and will subsequently fail. That is now happening to a few organizations in Jamaica.
If someone goes on leave, management must select the best talent to carry on the work rather than select the next person who is in line and who is not competent to act in a higher post. The person selected to act as Clerk of the House is probably being groomed for the top position, and the person in line might be on their way out. Work is about competence and not about showing someone respect.
A so-called junior person who is acting as Clerk of the House is now senior to the Deputy Clerk of the House. Positions in an organization are not treated as property left by the deceased person for those in line to inherit it.
My advice to the staff of Gordon House is to continue to do your work to the best of your ability and stay out of the organization politics. If you do, you could be asked to act as Clerk of the House next time.
It would be interesting to know how an internal memo to the staff got into the hands of the media. Oonu betta trod carefully.
Let us start discussing things of national import rather than concerning ourselves with the temporary appointment of someone at Gordon House.
