Dear Mr Prime Minister,
While things look good on the outside, many in Jamaica are facing challenges they should not have to face, and you are being blamed for it.
I will identify a few.
A woman wrote to NHT to report a problem with her NHT house, and the NHT has treated this lady disrespectfully. She contacted me, and I contacted the general manager of the NHT, and nothing has changed. I wrote to the chairman of the board, and the wait continues. The National Housing Trust (NHT) in Jamaica is headed by Board Chairman Linval Freeman and Managing Director Martin Miller.
I got a report about an elderly lady who went to the hospital only to be given the runaround. We need to have social workers in the various communities to assist the elderly who have challenges navigating the system.
Some public servants make unprofessional comments to the patients they serve. These comments are intended to embarrass the government.
A woman spent millions to purchase a brand-new 2026 JETOUR T2 motor vehicle from Tyre Warehouse Ltd., located at 1 Mannings Hill Road, and now she is without the use of her vehicle due to a defective braking system.
A man spent thousands of dollars to purchase solar equipment, which is defective, and now he is without the use of the equipment. The equipment was bought from EssentialSolar. This business is located at Shop 12, Premier Plaza, Kingston.
A lady bought electrical equipment, and she was given the wrong equipment. Now she is without the equipment and cannot get back her funds. I told her to report the matter to the police.
We need to remove the traffic ticketing system from the judiciary system. Matters should only go to court when the ticket issued is in dispute.
Persons have received foreign items in the products that they have bought, and I cannot recall the relevant agencies stating that it is now safe to start using such products.
The country now needs clearly defined policies to address challenges such as squatting, theft of utility services, the behaviour and conduct of our children in schools, and the poor attitude of some civil servants when dealing with the public.
The elderly and the sick cannot sleep peacefully at night because of entertainment events in their area. When nothing is done, people claim that police officers are being bribed to turn a blind eye to these breaches of the Noise Abatement Act.
We need to appoint inspectors who are responsible to identify deffective areas of the road and who will ensure that such areas are properly repaired promptly..
Organisations that are supposed to stand up for consumers have become powerless, Mr. Prime Minister.
Finally, Mr Prime Minister, we need administrators in the public sector who perform, and their staff are held accountable. Academic qualifications should not supersede excellent character and past outstanding performance in making job appointments. The underbelly is not looking good, Mr Prime Minister. Those who lead in the public sector must lead or pack their bags and go home.

An independent department of the people need to be set up immediately dedicated to intervening on behalf of the people having challenges dealing with various institutions,agencies and or government organizations.

Great sentiments Mr. Derby. It is unfortunate to now be at a place where Bob Marley's thoughts, that there can be no justice where criminals make the laws is manifesting. The consumer ovrrsight bodies such ad the Consumer Affairs Commission apprar when accessed, to work on behalf of those who violate and exploit our people. They refuse to do even the baaic work that the Consumer Protection Act empowers them to do, and then they place all blame and responsibility to act on the violated consumer, while collecting paychecks from the public treasury. How can things work like this in a decent and just society?

ReplyDeleteYes, and it's getting worse everyday. The rampant lack of regard and accountability is frightening. This is a country. One law for all, but instead there is lawlessness, injustice and chaos.
ReplyDeleteThe government will not remedy the many problems. They have no regard for the people. They're all about their own agendas. This is obvious in the things they allow and support. The issue here is a lack of understanding of the purpose of government. This is the root of the problem. Their attitude and behaviour expose everything. So, it's up to the people to demand better and to insist on it.
A lot of monies have been reported missing and nobody has been held accountable. None of it returned. Persons in the courts have been freed of charges, not because of lack of evidence, but due to political intervention. The public service and politics should always be kept separate.
One cannot have an issue reported and time passes without a resolution. That's gross disrespect. The people should speak up on these matters and demand change. Even consider taking legal action where possible. They have a voice, they're not helpless.
