| Andrea Purkiss. |
On September 1, 2026, the following was reported in the Gleaner. "In a release on Tuesday, the spokesperson on Tourism and Linkages, Andrea Purkiss, who is also a member of parliament for East Hanover, argued that something has to be done to address the issue, citing recent spikes in air travel, including from relatively close destinations such as Florida in the United States."
Spokesperson Andrea Purkiss should state what is to be done. If Air Jamaica were still operational and government-run, the government could address airfares. I have written several articles about how we destroyed Air Jamaica, but I have not heard any of our leaders comment on the issue.
Do we expect the government to tell the airlines to reduce airfares? We really need to have our heads examined. We are aware that the US vs. Iran war is going on, and the lack of free access to the Hormuz Strait has caused fuel prices to skyrocket.
Jamaicans overseas who complain about the high airfares can talk to the management of the airlines. They also need to ask why Air Jamaica is still not flying and not buy the argument that it was not profitable. It was profitable for those who nyam out di airline. Oh yes, those quadruped, gluttonous creatures were busy in the trough until the trough was empty.
Our people must understand the challenges, so when you see fake information in social or traditional media, you can say, "Rubbish."
We need to engage our brains before we put our mouths into gear.
