The Court Injunction Preventing The Appointment of a New Mayor is Anti-democratic

PNP Press Release - October 16, 2026

The People's National Party notes the ex parte interim injunction allegedly granted this morning on the application of the minority Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation to prevent today's duly convened special meeting of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation from being held, the purpose of which was to preserve democratic rule by electing a majority-supported Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

What has happened today is profoundly anti-democratic. The PNP now holds a clear 12-10 majority, and the leadership of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation must be allowed to reflect the will of the people.

We will be taking the matter back to court to seek to have the ex parte order (obtained without notice to the PNP Councillors, and without them being represented in court) set aside so that the meeting can be held and the appropriate resolutions passed to restore democratic governance with majority control of the Corporation.

Editors Note

One person should not be able to change the leadership of a parish council or the Parliament of Jamaica. For the mayor or the prime minister to be removed, new elections should be held. The next best decision to take is for an election to be held in the constituency or the division.

It should be noted that the constitution does not recognize the political parties.
