The Paediatric Association of Jamaica and the Heart Foundation of Jamaica, along with the Ministries of Health and Wellness and Education, Skills, Youth, and Information, launched the Weight A Bit campaign on September 30. This took place at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in Kingston.
The latest 2026 Jamaica Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) found that 31.7 percent of students were overweight and 15.3 per cent were obese. The survey, conducted among students in Grades 7–12, included 3,058 students from 32 schools and was designed to produce nationally representative estimates. In 2017, 23.3 per cent of students were overweight, and 9.2 per cent were obese.
Wednesday's launch event was a call to action for Jamaicans to help protect our children’s health through policies and programmes like the implementation of a healthy school nutrition policy, Jamaica Moves in Schools, and a well-designed sugar-sweetened beverage tax that could complement these measures
We must also make healthy food affordable. Government should examine removing or reducing applicable taxes and duties on nutritious foods, targeted subsidies, and support for local production and distribution
The following are some documents given at the launch and some pictures.

DeleteWe need to go back to eating real food and people need to stop queuing up at fast food restaurants. They are digging their grave with their teeth.
ReplyDeleteWe eat fast food and wi dead fast. What a ting!
ReplyDeleteWhen we were young, we use to eat a lot of bad food too. I think the major difference is that we were more physically active than today’s children.
