Drivers who keep driving carelessly on our roads and who make an early visit to their maker really don't care. The challenge is that they cause others to lose their lives.
The traffic ticketing system is not making a difference and is more about collecting revenue for the government or tipping off the officer. If the possibility of losing one's life in an accident has not made a difference, I don't see how issuing traffic tickets and increasing the fines will make a difference.
We need to discuss these suggestions below and see which ones we can implement to deal with the challenge.
- Remove the traffic ticketing system from the judicial system, and allow penalties to accrue automatically. For example, if a ticket is not paid for, it would be linked to your NIDS, and you would not be able to renew your licenses. You would also not be able to engage in certain business with the government.
- Our first step should be to reduce the number of vehicles on our roads. More vehicles mean more accidents.
- Importation of second-hand cars should be prohibited.
- Suspend the issuing of licenses to persons under 25 years old.
- Enhance the system which allows other motorists to file reports on bad driving practices by other drivers.
- Introduce a system of issuing warning tickets to drivers for improper driving on our roads.
- Each driver should be allowed one warning ticket per year.
- Emphasis should be placed on all forms of improving driving and not just on speeding.
- The aim of the ticketing system should be to withdraw the driver's license of some drivers permanently. These licenses can be reviewed within five years, when the driver would have to attend a registered driving school for at least three months. Their attitude and mental state would be assessed by a board.
These drastic decisions would help to remove many incompetent drivers who lack discipline from our roads.
The government would then have to look at resocializing the whole society. Our indisciplined drivers come from homes where children do as they please, they go to schools where there is no respect for order, and then they are let loose on our roads.
