Vernon Derby's Speech - Bureau Of Standards Long Service Awards

1         INTRODUCTIONS

Masters of Ceremony, Mr. Oraine Wallace and Miss Tanisha Mattis, The Honourable Dr. Norman Dunn, MP – Minister of State, in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce. Mr. Phillip Armstrong - Chairman, Standards, Council Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ); Other Council Members; Dr. Velton Gooden - Executive Director of the BSJ. Dr. Lorice Edwards-Brown – Chief Executive Officer for the National Compliance and Regulatory Authority (NCRA); Other distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.

Notice that I did not come up here and said ‘All Protocols Observed’.  I am at the Bureau of Standards and it is all about excellence today.

You will notice also that I have left out one group. When I was in Trelawny as a child…. and you get yu nice plate a food….. di nicest part was the meat. I use to leave the meat for last….. but by di time I said, “for health strength and daily food” di meat disappeared. So now you know I usually leave the meat for last – the best part of the meal.

The persons who I have left for last - those who have served, and have served well. Today we are recognizing them. Ladies and gentlemen let us put our hands together for the Bureau of Standards Awardees 2019 and 2020.

It is said that the most important asset in an organization is not listened on the balance. Ignore that asset and your business can operate at a loss. That asset is your human resource.

2         RISE

Today as we are gathered here, it is all about R.I.S.E. Recognizing Integrity Service and Excellence.

If each one of us, have that embedded in our DNA and it becomes a part of our culture then this country shall RISE from the ashes of crime, corruption, lack of respect for one another and a place where everything is…. a no nutten.

We have economic challenges and if Recognizing Integrity Service and Excellence does not form the foundation of what we do in this country then Jamaica shall not RISE.

If Recognizing Integrity Service and Excellence is not a part of every organization – be it public or private, then we shall not rise from the depth of hell that we have been in for too long now.

If Recognizing Integrity, Service and Excellence does not form the basis of our educational system then education by itself will take us nowhere.

The family is the basic social unit of the society. Now, if within the family structure we do not Recognize Integrity, Service and Excellence as the basis of developing our families, then the family will become dysfunctional and so will the society.

3         CORRUPTION AND CRIME

We are talking about integrity in Jamaica…Integrity? The Director of losses operations and analytics at JPS, Rasheed Anderson, said in 2018 that the light and power company estimates that approximately 200,000 households and commercial entities are stealing electricity. This compared to the approximately 600,000 legitimate customers. So, the 600,000 pay for the 200,000. I am almost sure that figure is increasing by the day.[1]

If children grow up seeing madda a tief, fada a tief, den pickney no just join di tiefin line too. Di same Pickney bright and pass 10 CXC, get first degree with honours and second degree with distinction and them becomes a Judge, the Prime Minister, the Governor General, or even a Bishop of Jamaica – more than likely tiefing will still be in his or her DNA. What a country what a life!

We live in a country where a leader in the private sector suggested that the most notorious criminal in this country could be used to promote the need to take the Covid-19 vaccine. Sometimes I wonder if it is the Covid-19 we should worry about.

4         THAT OLD LADY WHO CHANGED THE DIRECTION

I must tell you this positive story which has given me hope. An old lady called me one Sunday morning very distressed about this matter of that notorious criminal and she begged me to do something about it. She was horrified to believe that it would take a convicted murderer to convince the people of this country to take the Covid-19 vaccine.  I told her that she needs to do something about it. She said to me, “Mr. Derby I am an old woman I cannot do anything”.

I told the old lady that she needs to write me a letter sharing her thoughts about the matter, and I would share it with the powers that be. She said to me, “Mr. Derby you are going to put my name and make them come kill me”.

I said to myself that this lady could not be worrying about her life now, because when death knocks you cannot say that you are from Wait-A-Bit in Trelawny so death….Wait-A-Bit.

I told the lady to send me the letter and I would not add her name. Her letter along with my comments was posted on my Facebook page and also on my Bark Di Trute blog site. By Monday morning she called me and said, “Mr. Derby, my letter is all over the place. The Jamaica Observe carried the letter with my picture posted, and of course they found the ugliest picture of me to post. Oh yes, I got calls from politicians, church leaders and persons kept circulating that letter from that old lady.  Oh yes, each one of us can make a difference and good people must start to unite with good people for the good of this county to make a difference. That is a good way of Recognizing Integrity, Service and Excellence. Let’s ensure that those who do not, Recognize Integrity, Service and Excellence spend a very long time in her majesty’s hotel. Recognizing awardees like you who have Integrity, You, who have given Service and you have shown that Excellence has been your hallmark, that is the way Jamaica shall RISE.

5         WRONG EMPHASIS

Too many of us put far too much emphasis on academic qualifications, money, power and fame. All these shall pass away one day, because from the earth we came and to the earth we shall return.

Jamaica needs to RISE and we need to start with our youths. We put our youngsters through an educational system where many just memorize and regurgitate. You remember Big Boy; he would  copy everything from somebody else’s examination paper and he would also copy the person’s name. The Big Boy philosophy is still alive.

Once upon a time they use to read for their degrees at the University of the West Indies but now some just copy and paste. It would be great if they could copy and paste integrity. However, you cannot teach nor copy and paste integrity; you need to socialize our people so that they become a person of integrity.

6         A CHARACTER-BUILDING PROGRAMME FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Some of you might recall that I was the head of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme here in Jamaica. A programme where youngsters learnt to work as a team, give service and participate in extra curricula activities. It is a character-building programme. I am not for one moment saying that we should go back to that programme which is linked to our colonial masters, but we need a character building and recognition programme for young people in Jamaica. We give successful business men OJs and others ODs and CDs but what national system do we have in place to recognize our young people to encourage Integrity, Service and Excellence?

7         RECOGNIZING OUR WORKERS

We also need a formal system for recognizing our workers in the public sector who give exceptional service and we should reward them accordingly. Yu neva hear say encouragement sweetens labour? Give them a title such as Gold Distinguished Worker…. Put a little sweetness eena dem pocket man. One should not have to be promoted to be a manager when you are not management material, simple because you perform well as a worker. We sometimes reward a good worker by promoting him or her to a management position. You end up removing that excellent worker from the workforce and making him or her into a dysfunctional member of the management team.

8         THE LAWS

In our country we have many laws. There is one which I know you are all aware of…. the Public Bodies Management and Accountability Act and also The Financial Administration and Audit Act. We have the Auditor General and the Integrity Commission but the man on the street will tell you that if you tief two ackee yu fool. Move off with all half a billion and you are seen as a star. We should never forget that many wanted Cash Plus and they ended up getting Cash Minus. We are still paying for that today and the conceptualizes have gotten away scotch free as far as I know.

Let me not go any further for fear of being too controversial and I don’t want to make controversy kill the message. But I will say, those who have ears to hear, let them hear.

9         THANKS FOR INVITING ME

I must thank you for inviting me to share my thoughts with you. When I was called, I was asked to send something about myself and I really did not know what to say. I do not walk around with titles and honours; I am not perfect and I have made many mistakes and one such mistake is sometimes I forget that I have to take care of myself. I would like to believe though, that you have invited me because you wanted someone to say it as it is, someone who has served and looked for no returns, someone who enjoys serving and someone who would like to see this place be a better place.

10    PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

The President of the Council of Churches, Rev. Newton Dixon told me, “Workers contribute some $70 billion directly from their earnings (and then turn around and pay GCT, gas tax, transfer tax and a multitude of others). You are 1.2 million strong which means you help to support and provide for the other 1.7 million of our people who do not or cannot work. You are our nation's most valuable asset! Yet, you are still underpaid and overworked. It is note-worthy that you have survived but it is no surprise because of your indomitable, never-say-die, putting-up-resistance, "tun yuh han mek fashion" spirit. You prevail with the strength of the Almighty One and the resilience and strength which you've garnered from the trials and triumphs of your ancestors.

11    KAVAN GAYLE

Mr. Kavan Gayle President of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union said to me, “We must always recognize the working class for their contribution to the building of this country. They have worked with class.

12    DR. LOIS WALTERS

Dr. Lois C.A. Walters, President Human Resource Manage Association of Jamaica in her message to me says, “Recognizing employees & workers in the workspace for their service excellence builds the foundational principles of integrity and trust. Trust and honesty are the fabrics from which relationships of integrity in the workforce are designed. RISE - that is, recognition, integrity, service and excellence-is how we begin the process of repairing the damage done to our work ethic and raise the low trust embedded in our culture and society.”

13    I CHALLENGE THE BUREAU OF STANDARDS

I say I challenge the Bureau of Standards to continue to do its work ….. I know that money is tight but organizations like the Bureau of Standards Jamaica must get the needed funds to serve this nation.

I know that you have worked on the National Building Code and as far as I know it has not been incorporated into the law as yet. We are still waiting.

I do hope that the various parish councils and other organization are working with you so that you can carry out the required tests to ensure that our buildings are properly built.

I would love you to play a greater role in determining the standards for road construction and road maintenance. Too often potholes that are fixed seem to last just for the next rainy season.

I would love you to review the packaging and labeling of goods in this country. Many things are not packaged securely and person can therefore put foreign materials into these products.

Products such as flour if not packed properly can be contaminated.

Proper labelling is required so that we can know what we are eating.

We also need to encourage the state to stop importing electrical appliances which uses 60 cycles instead of 50 cycle electrical power as provided by the JPS.

14    CLOSING

In closing I must say it was great to be here. It is great to be in the company of persons who have helped to ensure that standards are maintained. There are other standards which are falling dramatically in this country but I don’t think that your mandate covers those things. Things like common courtesies - good morning, excuse me, thanks – words which seemed to have disappeared from our vocabulary.

Today I say especially to those of you who have served. I know it is a rough road and  a mighty long way to go. Those who are retiring will realize that this society has lost respect for those who have served but this society belongs to you as much as it belongs to the younger generation.  You must continue to make your voices be heard.

I do hope that one of these days that retirement will become an option for the retiree and the employer. The days of denying our elderly a job is a form of discrimination. Politicians do not retire so why should the rest of us.

To all of you, never give up. I am an expert at not giving up. I once faced the gun and I never gave up...I feigned a heart attack and I lived to tell the tale.  I face death about two years ago and I never gave up. They have tried to push me out of a job many times in the past, I never gave up. Those who tried to push me have ended up pushing themselves out of a job. I am still not giving up and why should you – only when the good Lord is ready for you …then and only then you have to give up that last breath.

15    TWO FROGS

Before I leave, I must tell you the story of two frogs:

Two frogs fell in a deep bowl.
One was an optimistic soul,
But the other took the gloomy view.
"We shall drown", and he cried adieu.

So, with a last despairing cry,
he flung up his legs and said goodbye.
The other frog quoted with a merry grin,
"I can't get out, but I won't give in!"

I'll just swim around till my strength is spent,
then will I die the more content.
Bravely he swam till it would seem,
his struggles began to churn the cream.

On top of the butter at last he stopped,
and out of the bowl he gaily hopped.
What is the moral? 'Tis easily found -
if you can't hop out, keep swimming around.

Let’s continue to live in hope, hope backed by faith and faith supported by action. We will never give up. Jamaica is too much a beautiful place for us to give up on. Yes Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica Land we Love.

Thanks for inviting me. I love you all.  Walk Good my friend.

Paw Paw Nor Pow Pow Will Never Paw Nor Pow Again

The paw to scratch no more

A wha sweet so!!!

So another one bites the dust and someone missed their Paw Paw or they missed their Pow Pow! We wonder how come these persons it is said commit certain acts, they go to jail and they are able to get the best lawyers and in no time they are back on the streets. Well, whether it is your Paw Paw or your Pow Pow, he can neither paw nor pow tonight.

They say that you are not guilty until convicted in a court of law. I contend that if you are guilty and you know you are guilty, you might be freed by the court of law, but you are still guilty. Your deeds will eventually condemn you to death even though we have stopped hanging these dawg heart criminals.

The following is a screen capture of an interesting personality Instagram account

If this woman being mentioned in the media is connected with the President of the Senate, then the President of The Senate must make it clear to the nation that he does not support her close relationship with persons who have been on the police radar.

There are many things being discussed on the ground at this time in terms of other leaders who have contact with the underworld  and these do not sound good for a developing democratic country. Jamaicans in the barber shops and the rum bars are now having a hot discussion about those officials who have been too close to some shady characters. These discussion will no doubt result in a further loss in confidence between our leaders and the people of this country. The time to clear the air is now. The discussion about political leaders who are friendly and/or have had intimate relationships with members of the underworld is stink at this time. There has been the discussion about a priest who it was said to be close with members of the underworld, but this priest is no longer around.

The discussions are taking place and we cannot pretend that they are not taking place. Daryl Vax has suffered for years due to what some say are cruel rumours but others see these things as facts. Min. Vaz has confronted these matters publicly and he is looking better these days. Who will follow next?

Juliet Holness Is No Fool!

Someone sent a picture of this twitter post to me.

If Michelle Obama criticized President Obama's VP Biden, I would think she is a smart wife and Obama needs to listen to her. If Hillary Clinton criticized Bill's Secretary of State I would think she is a smart wife and Bill  need's to listen to her.

So Juliet Holness criticized Andrew's Ministry of Health. I say PM Andrew Holness needs to listen to this woman because she is a very smart woman.  In Juliet's case, she is not only a smart woman and a smart wife but she is also a smart MP. The other ladies are just spouses!

I would advise all men, it is good to have a smart woman at your side who can be your Adviser In Chief. I would give the women the same advice.  Why have a partner who cannot be honest enough to speak the truth.

Note: MP's should first defend their constituencies and their country and not their party. Juliet Holness has just defined for us all, who is a good MP. One of the worst thing to happen is to have a government doing wrong things and to have all party MP's supporting the government because the party comes first!

The Following report was received from a resident on Acadia Drive in Kingston:

Wake Up KSAMC

For almost a year we have been reporting the need to remove vendors from our corridors along Acadia Dive in Kingston. This is a residential community and vending is not allowed. We have been plagued by one particular vendor and no one.. not even the police.. has been able to remove him. I contacted the Town Clerk, Mr Richard Hill who promised to deal with the situation. Up to last week, the vendor was still seen along the corridor selling produce he no doubt stole from the trees of residents in the community. It’s what he does .

We were able to stop him from coming into our complex to get rid of his wares but not before he openly threatened me in front of several residents . One day. he was on the corridors and I along with one of the residents decided to take a pic to support our complaints to the TC. He took up a brick and threatened me in front of the resident and had she not been there, could have easily smashed my head while spouting venom and the worst bad words I had ever heard in my senior years. I reported him to the Grants Pen police and was told that if he was seen in the vicinity of the complex, to give them a call. He disappeared for a while but is now back in full force on the corridor.

There was also the problem of a woman with young baby in tow, begging at the stop lights. A pic and complaint were sent to the CDA. Happy to report that we no longer see her there. The Gleaner vendor was also along the corridor and his presence was encouraging other vendors and loiters. A complaint to the Gleaner and he too has been removed. but the TC seems to have no power. The latest now is that every Saturday, we have a woman who comes up with her car and table, selling detergents, bleach, and soaps, with her baby in the back of the car. She has been asked to remove 3 times and a complaint and photo were sent to the TC. Further, the produce vendor is also back on the sidewalk, having recovered from an attack by his “colleagues” and his goods stolen. With cast on his arm, he continues to sell on his chosen day. It’s only a matter of time before other vendors set up stalls along our corridor, devaluing our property for which we continue to ensure that property taxes are paid.

Writing and complaining to the TC has gotten us nowhere. Seems we are on our own to get rid of these pests .

We are totally frustrated.

Two Women To Watch - Juliet Holness And Lisa Hanna

Most Hon. Juliet Holness, MP
Mrs. Holness was unknown politically when she was known as only the Prime Minister's wife. At that time, she became the topic of many verandah talks. Many wanted to see the PM's wife as this petite woman by the PM's side who does not even know how to boil water. Many wanted to see the PM's wife as someone who steps out each day in the finest outfits and jewelry, who continuously makes fashion statements.

At that time, many criticized Mrs. Holness on how she dressed poorly for a Prime Minister's wife. Many felt she needed to change her wardrobe. During the early days she was busy working in the St. Andrew Hills of East Rural St. Andrew helping Alexander Williams to get that seat. I understand that while she was busy on the campaign trail working on another person's campaign, members of the constituency were observing how well the wife of the Prime Minister was planning, organizing and directing the political organizations in the constituency.

Alexander Williams the candidate stepped aside due to the pressure of his work and  , members of the team did not take long to say that oonu fi mek Juliet run as MP. One wonders whether she was ready for the political plunge but she took the plunge as if she was a veteran Olympic swimmer and she came out with the Gold.

Lisa Hanna, MP

In recent times, working in her constituency, Jamaicans have been looking at her through the corner of their eyes. They are doing the same for another woman at this time. That other woman is Lisa Hanna. Due to party challenges, Lisa is facing an uphill task. Many have written off Lisa, the same way they had written off PJ Patterson who was tagged with many negatives things. S for Sugar, I for Iran and R for the Rollins deal. Well  SIR PJ said, "I shall return," and he did return and he stayed for a long time.

Back to my main subject, Juliet Holness. She is a woman who seems like that country woman who will climb the highest mountain, she will bend down and clean any floor, she is at home with any farmer in the St. Andrew Hills and she will motivate the young men to do the work. You remember that video, "Come on move it" as she got bags of goods swinging from hand to hand as she and others worked to get items to assist persons in her constituency.

I have written this blog about her today because I will say to you, The Most Hon. Juliet Holness, oonu no see nutten yet! She has separated herself from the pack. She seems to be putting Jamaica before her party which her husband leads. I am disappointed though, that many young journalists in commenting on her statement about the Covid-19 vaccination foul up, continue to view things through their political dark glasses. They are looking at her actions from a purely simplistic party political perspective.

Today a friend called me while I was thinking about Mrs. Holness, and told me that he had sent me a message. The following is the message:

Mrs. Holness is a CHAMPION, a true States Person. She's the BEST in this business. She's so Real and Objective. She does not mix politics or party affiliation with her PATRIOTISM, and her duty as a Representative of the Jamaican people on a whole. I wish there were more "politicians" like her. I wish I could buy her a "patty and a cocoa bread, and a soft drink", just as a token of her VALUE,  CONTRIBUTION, OBJECTIVITY, and PATRIOTISM. She is a TRUE EXEMPLARY States Woman. Please send this text to her..

(BTW, I like Lisa Hanna too, she was my favorite,  but Juliet Holness is now my CHAMPION.

Interesting days are ahead. Two women who could be leading both political parties in the future - Lisa Hanna and Juliet Holness - let us continue to watch them.

Note: Person in media should note that Mrs. Holness is an MP who is representing a constituency, and her role in politics is not to be the wife of the Prime Minister. When she travels overseas or attends a function in Jamaica with her husband then she does so in the capacity as the Prime Minister's wife. There is no need to keep reminding when she talks that she is the wife of the Prime Minister.

I welcome your comments on this article. The link to this blog will be sent to Mrs. Holness and Mrs. Hanna-Lake for them to see the comments.

96% Electricity Theft on St. John’s Road - 7th Transformer Replaced Today

Installing 7th Transformer

JPS in a release today, October 5, 2021, says that the company has
replaced the 7th transformer on St. Johns Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, due to illegal connections and theft destroying six transformers since the start of the year.  The community has a theft rate of 96%, with 25 out of the 650 residents being legal JPS customers.

Transformers typically have a lifetime of 15 to 20 years, but this community has managed to destroy six of these in nine months, at a cost of J$1.6Million.

JPS has been pulling down throw-ups, conducting meter audits, investigating accounts, installing anti-theft networks and conducting community renewal interventions in several communities in an effort to reduce theft. This scourge requires both government and private support; community upliftment; and consideration of the expansion of the social safety net to include electricity and water services.

JPS says that it is reminding the public that the theft of electricity creates reliability issues, and is a significant safety hazard with a high risk of fire and electrocution to both paying customers and those who are illegally extracting electricity.

Note: I have discovered that oftentimes persons complaint about electricity problems they are aware that persons are stealing their electricity and also that the stealing of electricity in their community is affecting the reliability of their power supply. It is therefore very disingenuous for persons to continue to blame the JPSCo for all of their ills and for our political leaders to wash their hands like Pontius Pilate. If the JPSCo goes bankrupt today Jamaica would be in serious problems. At the same time the rates must be affordable or else dark days are ahead.

Electricity theft is a serious social issue and the governments needs to appoint a national committee to look into the issues and to make suggestion to deal with this challenge.

Thriving Mentally During Covid-19 Pandemic - Dr. Lois Parkes

Thriving mentally, even during the COVID-19 pandemic? This may sound naïve, even ridiculous. Before you write this blog off as an outright denial of reality, I invite you to stay with me a bit. Without a doubt, the mental fatigue and burnout you are experiencing at this time is definitely real. However, so too are the solutions.

Let’s aim to understand why you may be feeling mentally fatigued and burnt out. A main reason is, simply put, the loss of control. For almost all workplaces, our normal ways of working have been disrupted almost overnight. Suddenly how we interface with clients and customers have changed, perhaps to virtual communication, using e-mails with scanned attachments, telephone calls etc. For many, remote working arrangements were suddenly thrust on them. How do I discipline myself to work from home? How do I balance work from home and school from home, if I have school-aged children? How do I cope with the new technologies that I now must use, virtual meetings that I must participate in, and unreliable internet access etc.? If I am still in the physical work space, how do I cope with wearing a mask all day while working, and remembering constantly to adhere to the protocols?

This loss of control then leads to a sense of anxiety. Many anxious thoughts will naturally ruminate in the minds of the workforce. Will I catch the virus from my co-worker? Will the organisation lose business, and in turn, will I lose my job? And with loss of control and anxiety, there is an experience of grieving, as individuals, teams, organisations, families and communities, individually and collectively are experiencing grief at various levels. There is the grief over what seems to be the loss of life’s norms such as attending a large wedding, company retreats and social activities, as well as the grief of losing coworkers, friends and family to the virus.

So how can one thrive mentally even during the COVID-19 pandemic?

First, acknowledge how the pandemic is impacting you and your workplace, not only in terms of business functionality and continuity but also mentally and psychologically. Emotional awareness is critical to this acknowledgement, and simply means to exercise empathy in understanding what are the emotions being experienced by yourself and others, and understanding how to use that information, to lend support to each other. Seek external assistance if needed. This is in fact a chance to normalize paying attention to and caring for one’s mental health. This is not a new need, but a need that has been ignored in the past.

Second, recognize that we were never really in full control before. Crises are in fact a constant of life. At the individual and organizational level, take stock of what are things that are outside of your control, but also what is actually in your span of control. Focus your energies there.

Third, seek out the opportunities that exist. Even in this crisis, there are several opportunities to capitalize on. This is an opportunity to reinvent business processes, to introduce efficiencies through technology. This is an opportunity to learn new skills; access to online learning was multiplied significantly – how can organizations and individuals take advantage of these learning and development opportunities?

Finally, this is a chance to recalibrate and redefine what is truly important. Organizations, teams and individuals should take the time to support each other, define their true core values, and how these will be their guideposts going forward. When we focus on what is truly important, we will find that we now only merely survive this pandemic. We can even thrive!

Great Service At Falmouth Hospital - Says Karlene In A Letter To Me

I trust that you are doing well and continue your brilliant contribution to Jamaica.  I just want to highlight the Falmouth Field hospital and the exceptional hard work provided by the medical, ancillary staff, a matter of fact everyone involved in the treatment of covid-19 patients there.

My Aunt was admitted there with the virus and she has high praises for the medical staff.  I myself, want to thank them for their professionalism.  I called on the phone and you know they cannot give out certain information over the phone, but what was shared with me, was enough to console the family.  I happened to visit, in order to speak to her doctor and I was pleased with what I saw.  What I  heard before I went was totally different from what I witnessed.  My relative lives in Montego Bay, a returning resident, so I was the closest relative to her in Jamaica (She was first taken to Hospiten Hospital and after doing her Covid test, the rapid test was negative and the PCR confirmed.  Mr. Derby, after a few hours there, because they don't accept Covid patient, she was transferred to the Falmouth Field hospital, her medical bill at Hospiten was $96,449.70). When I got there I identified myself and the doctor when available called me in the reception area and he went through my Aunt's file and told me what was her status etc and luckily I went, because she wanted a certain medication that the hospital did not have.  Also another patient wanted the same medication and his relative was there also and could get it for him.  The doctor asked if I could get it for her and I told him yes and I set out to get it. (I don't know Falmouth and almost got my car towed.  I was sitting in the car, and asked a friend to check at a pharmacy for the medication.  Some how we were not sure we would get it, because I guess the looks of the place, so when they came to tell me that the medication was there,(" Never judged a book by its cover") I was so happy, I came out the car so fast, forgot that I was not parked properly.  After getting the medication and was coming out the pharmacy, my friend called to say my car was been towed.  I ran out and I begged the wrecker-man and explained to him.  I told him I was from Kingston and was so glad when I realized the pharmacy got the medication. He asked me if that's how we park a town, I said no sir, but another car and a bike were parked there, so that the reasons why I was not parked properly and remained in the car.  Give God thanks he release the car. After that all three of us in the car had a good laugh.

My aunt was discharged last Wednesday and is doing well.  she has testimonies just seeing persons making their transitions around her.  She was off the oxygen from last Sunday and between Monday and Tuesday four (4) died around her.  One to her right and the other in front of her. Those two kept playing in her mind and since she was off the oxygen, I think she had more time to concentrate on what was happening.  She said the medical team have done their best and she is giving them high praises, to God be the glory she was released last Wednesday.

I would encourage persons who have loved ones at these institutions, I know its fearful to go there, but if they can try and go and speak with the doctor, because in my Aunt case, luckily I went because she had Covid pneumonia and needed the medication.  My thinking, is that there is a possibility that patients might need medications which the hospitals don't have and just by liaising with the hospital could save someone's life.  May God continue to blessing and protect all Frontline workers.  I lift my hats off to them.

Good Bless

Accusations And Denials Involving Rape, Where Will It End?

Elaine Lim

Social media have been bombarded by comments about two very popular videos. One posted by Elaine Lim and the other by Richie Stephens. This has to do with a case of alleged rape which Miss Lim says happened in Australia when she was on tour. Richie Stephens has rejected the accusations staying that Miss Lim presentation in the YouTube video was a staged presentation.

What is clear, is that this story is not going away any time soon. It will be on the radar for sometime because there is also the story about Tanya Stephens who declared in a video that she was also raped by a well known reggae artiste. Tanya did not say who the popular reggae artiste who raped her, and this has set tongues wagging and the rumour mills working overtime.

Richie Stephens

These stories are not only creating strong feelings in Jamaica for and against the individuals mentioned in the controversy, but also creating strong feelings in other countries. Today someone claiming to be a diplomat sent me a message from a country in  Asia. This person is very concerned about these stories. Other persons here in Jamaica have also reached out to me.  One  person who reached out to me is the product of a rape. Try to swallow that one, and take it even further and you will find it impossible to swallow - it was a child who was raped!

I am not here writing about this matter to make any judgement call. My concern is that the state will have to step up its efforts to encourage persons to come forward and report cases of rape. We need to encourage family members to report cases of rape when it happens within the family. Both the victims and the perpetrators need to be assisted and dealt with. The challenge with some rapists, is that oftentimes it is not a one off thing but they continue to carry out this cruel act on others and they continue to get away with it. For the victims it is not something that you can forget about. The sad thing is that the society believes that only women are raped. Young boys and young men also have had that awful experience but that is usually kept a top secret.

Tanya Stephens

Some of you might also have seen that video with Tanya Stephens talking about her experience of being raped as a youngster. I hope that CISOCA will reach out to Tanya and Tanya should speak to the police for these reasons:
          1. We should not allow this rapist to live amongst decent people.
          2. Tanya, you would  not want what you said happened to you to happen to another woman.

Accusations of Rape and rape itself are serious things. It can impact the innocent person who has been accused in a serious way and also if the rape did happen, the victim can be scarred for life. It should be noted that this matter has now grown wings and I would not be surprised if some artistes find out that their visas have been withdrawn by some countries  in the coming days!

Tomorrow during At Your Service on Nationwide Radio, from 0830 to 1000 EST, we will take a look at the impact of the allegations on getting visas or rescinding such visas. Interesting days are ahead considering that all of this could end up  with some artistes not being able to perform in other countries.

I am suggesting very strongly that a poll be conducted to find out what is the incidence of rape in Jamaica and the impact that it is happing on the victims and the society. We should also get from the respondents, recommendations to deal with this dehumanizing act carried out by depraved members of the society. Please show your concern by sharing this post and adding your comments. Show that you really care for those who have suffered at the hands of rapists.

The Last Quarter Of Life - Author Unknown

You know... time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young and embarking on my new life. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But, here it is... the last quarter of my life and it catches me by surprise... How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that I was only on the first quarter and the fourth quarter was so far off that I could not visualize it or imagine fully what it would be like.

But, here it is... my friends are retired and getting gray... they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me... but, I see the great change. Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant.. but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become.

Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I fall asleep where I sit!

And so... now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, though I’m on the last quarter and I'm not sure how long it will last... this I know, that when it's over on this earth... it's over. A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done... things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not on the last quarter yet.. let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you're on the last quarter or not!

You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life.... so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember.. and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.

LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY!

DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY!

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Remember "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.

LASTLY, CONSIDER THIS:

~ Going out is good...

Coming home is better!

~ You forget names....

But it's OK because some people forgot they even knew you!!!

~ You realize you're never going to be really good at anything like golf.

~ The things you used to care to do, you aren't as interested in anymore, but you really don't care that you aren't as interested.

~ You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV 'ON' than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep".

~ You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch..

~ You tend to use more 4 letter words .. "what?"..."when?".. ???

~ You have lots of clothes

in your wardrobe, more than half of which. you will never wear.

~ But Old is good in some things: Old Songs,

Old movies,

and best of all,

OLD FRIENDS!!

Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!"

Send this on to other "Old Friends!" and let them laugh in AGREEMENT!!! It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter That Tells What Kind Of Life You Have Lived.

Have an awesome Evening!! Cheers!

Bauxite Levy Re-Introduced

KINGSTON, Sept. 30 (JIS):

Hon. Robert Montague
The Government of Jamaica has reinstated the Bauxite Production Levy on Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners II coming out of an agreement with Concord Resources Limited.

This follows the acquisition of New Day Aluminium (Jamaica) Limited’s 49 per cent of shares in the company by Concord Resources Limited.

“It should be noted that both parties are against the continuation of the profit share regime,” said Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Robert Montague, during the sitting of the House of Representatives on September 29.

On September 6, 2018, the Government of Jamaica and New Day Aluminium (Jamaica) Limited signed an Establishment Agreement, which prevented the closure of the bauxite mining operations headquartered at Discovery Bay, St. Ann.

This saved the jobs of more than 500 workers and contractors and resulted in the creation of Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners II, as a joint venture between the Government of Jamaica (51 per cent) and New Day Aluminium (Jamaica) Limited (49 per cent).

The profit-share agreement between the Government of Jamaica and New Day, which was largely in lieu of the Bauxite Production Levy, extended the agreement to include the operations of New Day’s alumina refinery at Gramercy, Louisiana, United States (US).

The Government’s 51 per cent interest in Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners II is managed by the GOJ-owned Jamaica Bauxite Mining Limited (JBM).

Mr. Montague informed that in a letter dated July 14, 2021, New Day Aluminium (Jamaica) Limited informed the Jamaica Bauxite Mining Limited and other Government of Jamaica members of the Executive Committee, that effective July 1, 2021, Concord Resources Limited had acquired the majority ownership interest in New Day Aluminium from other shareholders in the DADA Holdings Group.

“Pursuant to this transaction, Concord Resources Limited had acquired the majority interest in New Day Aluminium (Jamaica) Limited,” he explained.

Concord Resources Limited is a metals trading firm, which focuses on the distribution, supply chain, and risk management of non-ferrous metals and raw materials. Headquartered in London, the company operates offices in New York and Hong Kong and serves customers worldwide.

Mr. Montague also informed that the Asset Usage Fee debt of US$3.4 million owed to JBM by New Day will be paid in full by Concord.

“Concord has already paid half this amount on September 10, 2021. The remaining portion is to be paid by the end of October 2021. These funds would have been paid earlier had Hurricane Ida not impacted the company’s operations in Louisiana, on Sunday, August 29, 2021,” he said.

He noted that there are various other matters that have been discussed and agreed upon.

“These negotiations are to resume on October 6, 2021, to allow for the fashioning of an agreement that effectively treats with Concord’s investment in our bauxite industry,” Mr. Montague said.

China Donates Buses For Vaccination Drive

KINGSTON, Sept. 30 (JIS):

Hon. Dr. Christopher Tufton
The Government’s vaccination drive has been boosted through the donation of two mobile units by the Yantai Municipal People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China.

The vehicles, valued at ¥878,597 RMB, are already in operation and are being managed by the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA).

Dr. Tufton said they will help Jamaica reach its vaccination target of 65 per cent of the population by March 2022. He informed that the Ministry will be seeking to purchase additional units from the manufacturer for the island’s vaccination programme.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, in her remarks said that the donation of the units is a further demonstration of the close friendship and solidarity between the countries and will further boost the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations.

“This will bring us closer – along with the receipt in the near future of the Shinopharm vaccines – to achieving the vaccination targets set by the Government of Jamaica,” she added.

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Jamaica, His Excellency Ambassador Tian Qi, said that the donation of the vehicles, as well as medical equipment, which will arrive in the island shortly, will further bolster the country’s response to the pandemic.

He noted that China has been doing its best to provide humanitarian assistance to the international community and supporting global anti-epidemic efforts and will be providing two billion doses of vaccines for the rest of the world by the end of this year.

Vice Mayor of Yantai, Mu Shuqing, noted that donation forms part of the cooperation between the countries and cities, while Deputy Director General of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC, Shandong Provincial Committee, Chen Baiwei, said that the city stands ready “[for] more practical cooperation [with Jamaica] in trade, agriculture, fisheries and people-to-people and cultural exchanges”.

Consumer Affairs Commission

KINGSTON, Sept. 30 (JIS):
Sasha-Gaye Russell
The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) is reminding consumers of their responsibilities under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

The Act speaks to the promotion and protection of consumer interests in relation to the supply of goods and the provision of services to ensure protection of life, health and safety of consumers and others.

In her address at the CAC’s virtual Consumer Talks session on September 29, Legal Officer, CAC, Sacha-Gaye Russell, outlined responsibilities under the Act that all consumers should observe. These are the responsibility to be aware of the quality and safety of goods and services before purchase; the responsibility to gather all available information and facts about a product or service; and keeping abreast of changes and innovations in the marketplace.

“Take note of the serial number of the appliance that you select, so that after you make payment for that appliance and it is delivered to you, you can check the serial number of the appliance that is delivered to ensure it is the same serial number as the one you selected when you were in the store,” she advised, recommending that consumers test appliances and electronics before leaving the store.
In the information-gathering phase, she recommended that consumers check consumer product review sites prior to purchase.

Ms. Russell also suggested that persons check the Consumer Product Safety Commission website to see if there has been any recall in relation to a particular item.

Consumers should also query if the item has been refurbished, the warranty and return policy of the vendor, particularly for high-value transactions, prior to purchase (mobile phones, large appliances, motor vehicles), and retain receipts of purchase, particularly for these transactions.
She informed that under the CPA, the store warranty period should be similar to that of the manufacturer.

Regarding purchase of a service, she recommended that  consumers research the total cost to ensure that they are aware of all the add-on costs included in the purchase. “It is important that consumers ask all the relevant questions of the provider who is offering the service to ensure they have the budget [for purchase and maintenance],” she said.

In addition, consumers have the responsibility to think independently and to make choices about well-considered needs and wants, the responsibility to respect the environment and avoid waste and litter contributing to the pollution of the environment, and to be ethical and  fair by not entering into dishonest practices.

“Consumers should not be deceitful about a purchase or transaction, for example, claiming that an item is faulty when the item is not defective,” Ms. Russell said, noting that redress cannot be claimed for items damaged during the installation process or for items that are not used for the purpose for which there were designed.

By the same token, she said the vendor has a responsibility to inform the consumer of all details of the product or service. Consumers also have the responsibility to speak out and inform manufacturers and the Government of their needs and wants; and the responsibility to let grievances be known and inform businesses of dissatisfaction with a product or service in a fair, honest and respectable manner.
“Through your voice, you impact policy and standards so that better laws are passed and better-quality goods are produced,” Ms. Russell said.

The CAC is the national agency responsible for consumer advocacy. For more information, persons are invited to visit www.consumeraffairsjamaica.gov.jm
