We and Dis 9-Day Wonder!!!

One of the challenges we face as a nation is the problem of what we call 9-day wonder. This might not just be a Jamaican phenomenon but a challenge which people from across the world face. We continue to fall into the same pit that we have fallen in before.

Things remain the same because as soon as something happens we forget about it. One strategy of some leaders in the public and private sector is don't respond. They will forget about it soon.

Man Who Died At The Sangster International Airport This Year

How many of us remember the case of the man who fell and died at the Sangster International Airport this year? Was an autopsy done and if so what are the results? Has anyone sued anyone for failure to ensure the safety of this man? Have we heard from Jet Blue? His relatives have all gone quiet!

Mysterious Plane Crash in Clarendon

That mysterious plane which crashed landed in Clarendon some years ago. What came out of those investigations? Is the case dead?

Murder of Air Jamaica Executives

The murder of two Air Jamaica Executives, Noel Rennie and Lloyd James - can anyone say what came out of those cases?

Mysterious Ganja Plane at Vernam Field

Who remembers the case of some army members who tried to stop what appeared to be a ganja plane from disappearing from Vernam Field some years ago? Do you remember the report in the Gleaner that the officers came under heavy gunfire from the occupants of the plane? 😀

The Kissing St James High Girls

What is the latest on the kissing girls in St. James who were expelled or transferred to other schools? Jamaica for Justice had a lot to say about that case. What has happened since?

Civics in Schools

Civis was to be reintroduced in schools. Has the subject been introduced in all schools?

Auditing of Educational Institutions

A former Minister of Education had said he would ensure that all schools would be audited, and the administrators would be required to produce audited financial statements annually. Is that happening now?

Permanent Temporary Workers

We have had persons working temporarily permanently for years and therefore have been denied certain benefits. When will we have a law to deal with that? How about those who hold top jobs temporarily - they refer to them as acting in the post or they call it a Interim position.

The Death Penalty

The death penalty is still on the books. We have been talking about this for a long time. When will this matter be addressed as to whether we will resume the death penalty? Jamaica is indeed a criminal's paradise!

Audit of Integrity Commission

We are yet to be told if the Integrity Commission has been audited. I am not talking about presenting audited financial statements Mr. Panton. We are talking about the auditing of the department.

Fixed Elections Date

Have we forgotten the idea of having fixed election dates?

Apartheid System in Secondary Schools

When will we discontinue the apartheid system of Education? Some schools are referred to as traditional high schools and some as new secondary schools. They are treated differently. The testing system for the selection of children who go to Campion College while other children go to Tarrant High for example.

Assessing Our Schools and Students

I was hoping by now schools and students would be accessed by how many of them graduate after high school competent at the grades 11, 10, 9 or 7 level. Also, can someone tell me why we promote children to grade 7 in a secondary school when they can't even read and write? We should consider promoting students from year 1 to the next year at the university even if they are not competent in the work for the year that they have just completed.

Which One Dem Mi Lef Out

I know, I have left out many things. I have also forgotten them. Remind me by adding them as comments.

Crocodile Lost His Life

I received an unconfirmed report that a minibus ran into a crocodile on the Mandela Highway and flipped. Onlookers claimed the crocodile died.

Commissioner of Police Concerns

Dr Kevin Blake
The Commissioner of Police Dr Kevin Blake is concerned about the amount of police officers involved in accidents and the loss of lives and property. Based on the tone of the police chief's message, it seems that it is just a matter of time before officers will pay dearly for their driving indiscretions.

The Commissioner is also very concerned about how a few police officers interact with the public. It seems to me that it is members of the public who need to have their cameras ready and not the police, to record the behaviour of officers who are bringing the force into disrepute. Thanks to those citizens who have been recording such behaviours.

The public needs to know when recorded cases of such indiscretions are dealt with by the disciplinary committee of the force, so that Jamaicans can know that action has been taken.

Based on information from confidential sources, it seems that new systems will be put in place to hold officers accountable for how they carry out their work. If that works then we could probably reduce the workload of INDECOM.

Officer Rohan James Case Postponed

Corporal Rohan James

The case involving Corporal Rohan James and the police high command has been postponed until February 26, 2025.

It has been postponed to allow for amendment of claims. Attorney Hugh Wildman had been replaced by Lemar Neale for the defendant.

I am still hoping that the parties can withdraw the case from the judicial system even at this stage. The Federation and the police command should work with a mediator to resolve the issues. This would be an excellent example for the nation in resolving disputes.  Corporal James was interdicted based on statements he made about the high command at a funeral service for a colleague.

My understanding is that already changes in the Jamaica Constabulary Force might come about due to the position that was taken by the Federation under the leadership of Rohan James.

Leo Bennett
That reminds me of the fireman Leo Bennett who took the concerns of firemen to the top of the Transport Centre building in Kingston. These concerns were effectively brought to the attention of all. From the feedback I have received, he is an intelligent and outstanding fireman. He still serves although he has been demoted. I do hope that he will be forgiven and be reinstated to his previous post.

Let's remember that some of our fore-parents were convicted criminals due to their fight against injustice. A few paid the ultimate price and they are now National Heroes.

Support The Clean Up of Mandela Park and Kingston Generally

Halfway Tree

People continue to ignore the rule of law and order in the country and therefore the rest of us must support the authorities in taking appropriate action and should demand that action be taken.

Thanks to the citizen who brought it to my attention that a store has been set up at the entrance of   Mandela Park in Kingston on Suthermere Road. Mayor Swaby and the KSAMC are trying to improve the appearance of our capital. Let us work with the council to ensure Kingston becomes the most beautiful city in the Caribbean.

I expect this matter to be dealt with within a week. Halfway Tree is not looking good and I must condemn the entities and others who supported all those unsightly stalls around the park. We need order in the capital and in the country.

Diabetic? Know Your Status

 ðŸ’“💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓

💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓

Press Release From The Heart Foundation of Jamaica:

Deborah Chen - Executive Director
 Heart Foundation of Jamaica.

Kingston, Jamaica – November 1, 2024 - “Sugar is not just a sweet temptation; it is a deadly trap, ensnaring us in a web of addiction and disease.”– Case Against Sugar, Gary Taubes. As we recognize World Sugar Awareness Week from November 11-15, 2024, Gary Taubes' powerful words remind us of the serious health risks posed by excessive sugar consumption. Additionally, on November 14, 2024, we will observe World Diabetes Day, which calls for greater awareness and action in addressing the diabetes crisis. The overconsumption of 'free sugars' found in everyday foods and beverages has fueled a growing epidemic of preventable diseases such as obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes, impacting millions globally.

At the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ), we are committed to breaking this cycle by educating and informing the public. The Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey (JHLS) III (2016-2017) offers alarming insights into the state of diabetes in our country. According to the survey, 1 in 8 Jamaicans aged 15 and older are living with diabetes, representing a national prevalence of 12%. The risk increases with age, from 1.5% among those aged 15-24 to 42.4% in individuals 75 years and older. Even more concerning is that only 58% of Jamaicans living with diabetes are aware of their condition.

There is a critical need for collective action in addressing the health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption in Jamaica. There is an urgent need for lifestyle changes, but we cannot achieve this alone. It is through a collective commitment and desire to support others that initiatives like our screening services and nutrition education sessions during World Sugar Awareness Week will truly make an impact.  Additionally, we intend to carry out the following activities during the observation period:

  1. Day One: Tuesday November 12, 2024 - The Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) in partnership with the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) and the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) Free Screening Event for Senior Citizens (First 70 persons)
  1. Day Two: Wednesday November 13th 2024 - A virtual member’s meeting for HFJ members will be held via zoom at 12:30pm titled “Heart Health Matters: A Members’ Conversation on Diabetes & the Heart”
  1. Day Three: Thursday November 14th 2024 - Outside Broadcast in observance of World Diabetes Day on the 14th of November. The Outside broadcast will be held from 1-5pm on the 2 Live Crew program on Radio Jamaica.

To commemorate this worthy cause, we ask the public to join us in the following ways;

  • Wearing Blue: The official colour of diabetes awareness is blue. Wear blue clothing or accessories to show your support.
  • Share Information: Educate others about diabetes, its risk factors, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
  • Get Tested: If you are at risk for diabetes, consider getting tested for early detection and intervention.

Given the high rates of diabetes and its complications in Jamaica, it is imperative that we actively engage the general public and vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly in preventative health measures. It is in all of our best interest to aid the Heart Foundation of Jamaica in “Promoting Heart Health in Jamaica”

Shocking Breaking News for WhatsApp Users!

I discovered that a WhatsApp user who sent personal messages to a friend had all his messages also sent to my WhatsApp account.  I reported the matter to the WhatsApp Help Centre. This is indeed shocking in that I was able to obtain personal information about the person. This information in the wrong hands could be used for nefarious purposes.

I could see the messages sent by one party,  but I was unable to see the responses from the other party. The software assures us that communication using WhatsApp is secure. We need to get an answer advising us how this breach is possible?

Recently, I made a podcast advising people on how to make their WhatsApp accounts more secure. Very few people have responded to that podcast.

I suggest that persons desist from sending confidential information via WhatsApp until further information is given. Note also that confidential information should not be sent via email unless you are using a secure email system.
