PNP Expresses Concerns About Alleged Violent Attack on Mayor Michael Belnavis

Press Release From The Peoples National Party - 20250122:

Councillor Jouvaughnie Byfield

Junior Spokesperson on Security and Defence, Jouvaughnie Byfield, has expressed deep concern and condemnation following the alleged violent attack on Mayor Michael Belnavis of St Ann’s Bay, which occurred in St Mary on the night of Monday, January 20, 2025. Mayor Belnavis reportedly sustained chop wounds during the incident, for which he was hospitalised.

“I am deeply disturbed by the recent attack on Mayor Michael Belnavis. This violent act is completely unacceptable and highlights the ongoing need for decisive action to address crime in our country,” Byfield stated.

Reports indicate that an injured suspect has been apprehended in connection with the incident. Byfield is urging Mayor Belnavis to fully cooperate with the investigation to ensure that justice is served. He also expressed hope for a full and transparent report from the authorities on the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Byfield said “in the context of the vague reports heavily influenced by political spin, the JCF needs to make a public statement on their investigation to assure the public that a thorough and impartial investigation is being conducted, and that no cover up is taking place to protect a politically connected person.”

Specifically, he is asking if the Mayor’s hands were swabbed and whether ballistic testing was done on his firearm.  If a violent crime occurred it is not up to Mayor Belnavis to determine whether or not a report is made to the police.

Byfield further called on all Jamaicans to stand united in condemning this act of violence and to work towards creating a safer environment for all citizens.

Massive Security Operations on Old Harbour Road - No Word From The Police

I still have not heard from the police about what is happening on the Old Harbour Road regarding the blocking of the road. I have been receiving videos and those videos show that a significant number of police officers are now in the area. If you have relatives in the area, advise them to go into their home. It is not wise for the residents to be engaging the police in any confrontation while they are doing their work. I am also appealing to the police to treat the people with respect and vice versa.

The following are some videos that have been forwarded to me:

Bark Di Trute Subscriber Wins Ticket to See Jazz in the Gardens GIves Thanks

Contributed

I am a subscriber to and regular reader of Bark Di Trute. I accepted Vernon Derby's "challenge" to try winning a ticket to the show "Jazz in the Gardens" to be held at the Pegasus Hotel on January 19. I say "challenge" because I'm generally a stranger to winning things like that😁. Of course, I was pleasantly surprised when informed I got a ticket.

I must report that the show did not disappoint! I won't single out any performer because all of them entertained with superb singing, song selections, audience involvement, and an exhibition of just pure musical talent! Four extremely enjoyable hours of nostalgia mixed with good humour as well. I loved it! The fact that the show was moved inside to the ballroom (because of rain threat, I guess) was not missed.

I invite you all to subscribe to Vernon Derby's Bark di Trute, be up on the news and...you may very well win something nice!!

MP Williams Criticizes PNP President for Embarrassing Gaff

Press Release From the JLP:

MP Donovan Williams

Attorney-at-law and Jamaica Labour Party Spokesman, Donovan Williams, is chiding PNP President Mark Golding for inaccurately telling the country by way of a statement on Sunday January 19, 2025, that Marcus Garvey was “exonerated” by the United States Government, when in fact Garvey was issued with a posthumous pardon which is otherwise known as an act of clemency.

In a written statement which was entitled in part - 'The Exoneration of Marcus Garvey', Golding repeatedly stated that "Marcus Garvey’s exoneration corrects a grave historical miscarriage of justice" and also intimated that the development is "a triumphant acknowledgement of a legacy restored".

In an audio statement, Golding also said “we are claiming this as a complete exoneration of our national hero".

Mr. Williams says the fact is a pardon, while welcome, is only part of the process of clearing Mr. Garvey's name and achieving full and unconditional exoneration of Jamaica's first National Hero.

Mr. Williams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Central Kingston, stated:

"It is evident that the PNP President does not understand the fight to clear Marcus Garvey's name. Golding's misleading statement indicates that he does not understand that a pardon is not an exoneration but references the act of forgiving for commission of an offence. Exoneration includes a full declaration of innocence, while acknowledging unjust prosecution".

Mr. Williams says while the posthumous pardoning of Marcus Garvey, which has come following tireless lobbying by Prime Minister Holness, Chairman Montague and Ministers Grange and Johnson Smith, in collaboration with Marcus Garvey's family, Diaspora stakeholders and members of the US Congress, is a step in the right direction - the work of the Jamaica Labour Party administration continues towards achieving the full and unconditional exoneration of Marcus Garvey.

In further reprimanding the PNP President who he described as detached from the history and the legacy of Garvey, Mr. Williams said:

"This is not the first time that the PNP President has issued hasty, historically incorrect and misleading statements in what appears to be an inappropriate bid to take credit for a development which neither he or his Party had anything to do with. I am hopeful that the PNP President will reflect on the error of his ways and consider issuing an apology for misleading the country. It is sad that on a day when we should all be celebrating a positive development, the PNP President in his apparent rush for glory has again demonstrated his unsuitability to lead Jamaica."

Mr. Williams says it would also be good if the PNP President would also on behalf of his Party express some contrition for former PNP President, Norman W. Manley's unjust prosecution of Marcus Garvey in 1930 and for utterances by Manley where the former PNP President also disrespected Mr. Garvey by questioning Garvey's intelligence and describing him as a 'national disgrace'.

Editor's Note:

On Sunday morning, January 19, my Bark Di Trute readers highlighted the error made by the Opposition Leader Mark Golding.
