Roy Rayon and the Bush Wackers

 Contributed

Roy Rayon

Wackerman, an ever-expanding career opportunity, some would say a hustle

Wackerman, accident-prone.

So you don't have a job, get a Wacker if you are that inclined and you can make a reasonable living. Self employed, you work at you own pace.

I am the Wackerman, the destroyer the missile thrower. when pedestrians see me or better yet, hear me.

They are scared, fear takes them over.

When drivers of trucks, buses and cars see or hear me, they think of dents or a windshield.

I don't give a damn. A werk mi a werk.

Oh yes, they are a law unto themselves.

They remove the protective guard from the equipment.

And when the stones take off and do damage

The operators do same and take off.

If you are lucky enough to catch up with them and collect on spot, then you are fortunately lucky.

If you get a commitment to cover the cost.

That is all you will get as you won't see them again and the telephone rings you into frustration.

The police then say to you that all can do is file a suit.

If it's a windshield and you are good with your insurance, you are fine.

Anything else like your back glass, CRY.

I have a Wacker

I never remove the guard

Whenever it's in use if I see a vehicle or a person, I pause.

Accidents are inevitable, carelessness of that proportion is evil. My mother would say dungkya/dont care.

Why are these persons not regulated?

It's big business.

Who is gonna bell the cat

Who is gonna fist the cat.

LawMAKERS Cannot Be LawBREAKERS!!!

Editor's Note:

I have posted the following press release sent to me by the Advocates Network. Note that contrary to what is stated in the press release, Mr Chuck did not advise his fellow parliamentarians not to comply with the provision in the IC Act. Click HERE to listen to my podcast on the matter.

The Following Press Release Received From The Advocates Network - 20250127:

Kingston, Jamaica, Monday, January 27, 2025. The Advocates Network (AN) joins law-abiding citizens in expressing outrage and alarm at the recent public exhortation by MP Delroy Chuck, during Parliament’s Integrity Commission (IC) Oversight Committee meeting on January 14, 2025. We are befuddled that a Minister of Justice would advise fellow Parliamentarians not to comply with the provision in the IC Act that requires them to provide information about their spouses’ and children’s earnings to the anti-corruption body. This amounts to an advice to

BREAK THE LAW!!!

This is untenable! This not only weakens public trust of Parliamentarians, but undermines the rule of law and core principles of democracy. This cannot be another “9-day wonder”!!!

We remind the public that each Members of Parliament (MPs) must take the Oath of Allegiance which requires them to “uphold and defend the Constitution and the laws of Jamaica.” Minister Chuck understands this responsibility very well and explicitly stated so in 2000 during deliberations on the bill entitled The Corruption Prevention Act. The Hansard reported that he said:

“It's very important…that persons who would like to be public servants elected or bureaucrats, that they should be protected and protected in the sense, Madam Speaker, that their privacy in terms of their assets and information should be protected…I found that when I had to declare everything I own, everything my wife and my children own to be an invasion and indeed, I wondered if I had to. But eventually because I am a parliamentarian I said I will follow the law and I followed it”. (our highlight) This stands in stark contrast to his current position. What changed since 2000?

What objective does it serve and what does it communicate to the public to have our Minister of Justice recommend that the IC explain “Why is the IC asking members to indicate the salaries of their spouse or children?”

This requirement is not the IC’s idea, rather it is that of our own legislators. MP Chuck has been a member of the

Lower House for 27 years and would have been complying with the Parliament’s Integrity of Members Act, 1973 and the Integrity Commission Act, 2017 BOTH of which required information on spousal assets and liabilities to be declared.  MP Chuck was also our Minister of Justice with responsibility for the parliament’s legislative work at the time of the crafting, scrutiny and passage of the current legislation in 2017.

Considering this huge discrepancy in his 2000 statement and that of January 14, 2025, his own understanding that the law requires it and not the IC, and his own compliance with this law for over two decades, the AN strongly urges Minister Chuck to provide a valid explanation for his anomalous advice to other MPs.

In the absence of a valid explanation, the AN joins the call for him to tender his resignation.

Fitz Jackson Sounds Warning - The Gerrymandering of Political Boundaries in St. Catherine and Portmore

The Following is a Press Release from the Shadow Cabinet Minister with Special Responsibilities for matters relating to Portmore. Fitz Jackson MP  - 20250127:

Fitz Jackson MP

The government has resumed its pursuit of reinstituting the tribalized practice of gerrymandering in Jamaica under the disguise of creating a 15th parish. On the Order Paper of Parliament for January 28, 2025, is the Counties and Parishes (Amendment) Act, 2025 to be tabled. This certainly will be rammed through Parliament, much the same way others like the initial NIDS Bill and later the constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Auditor General.

This is being done, notwithstanding the assurance by PM Holness on January 17, 2024, in Portmore, just before the recent Local Government elections, against the widespread public pushback from Portmore and the wider Jamaica.

The only goals of the 15th parish proposal are a narrow partisan self-serving desire to separate the people of

Portmore from the rest of St. Catherine in order to secure political control of the Spanish Town Municipal Corporation and create safe parliamentary seats for the JLP in Portmore ahead of the upcoming general elections due by September 2025. These goals of the government were confirmed by a former member of the Prime Minister Holness Cabinet and senior member of the Jamaica Labour Party, Minister Clifford Warmington publicly on Sunday November 12, 2023, in Portmore, and broadcasted in the public media. Then Minister Warmington stated that the boundaries of Portmore will be changed to ensure that areas of two Portmore constituencies that predominantly voted for the Peoples National Party will no longer be able to remain in those constituencies and local Government Divisions. This rebirth of gerrymandering in Jamaica under this JLP administration represents a retrograde move to undermine and reverse the gains to detribalize the democratic processes achieved since 1980!

The Bill being tabled in Parliament to establish new parish boundaries will consequentially change constituency boundaries and thus emasculate the fundamental intentions of the role of the independent Electoral Advisory Commission and provisions of the Representation of the Peoples Act. This, notwithstanding PM Holness declaration at a Portmore event on January 17, 2024, that: “Any change in the physical boundaries of a political geographical area will result in a change in voting outcomes, quite possibly, but that does not mean that you should not change political geographical boundaries. Indeed, there is a standard process engaged in, in a routine way by the Electoral Commission,”. He also stated then: “… there is no way that we could seek to establish a parish and it be clouded in political accusations. No, we would never do that, and I want the people of Portmore to be assured of that,” he said.

There has been no further engagement by the Government with the people of Portmore or the wider Jamaican public on the matter since those announcements on January 17, 2024. This proposed Act will, among other things, immediately terminate the direct election of the mayor of Portmore, a provision fought for by the residents of the Municipality over 21 years ago.

The Peoples National Party is reminding the Government that should it provide to gerrymander the boundaries of St. Catherine with establishment of new political boundaries unilaterally, we will respond strenuously and forcefully in the Courts and on the streets in protection of Jamaica’s democratic achievements against political tribalism over the past forty-five (45) years. Upon forming the government after the upcoming general elections, the Act establishing a fifteenth parish will be repealed without delay, and the people of Portmore exhaustively consulted on any changes they wish prior to make, including the direct election of their Mayor.

Outstanding Leader and Educator Passed On

The Hon, Dr. Alfred Sangster, OJ, CD, JP, PhD

The Hon. Dr. Alfred Sangster, former Head of the University of Technology Jamsica has passed on. He died last night.

Dr. Sangster was a dedicated public servant, and he had a vision for the university as its Principal. The university has achieved those objectives over the years.

Under his leadership, the college produced many outstanding graduates who have served with distinction locally and internationally. Under his leadership, students not only excelled in academics but also in the creative arts and sports.

He was known to be a humble man who was not driven by the trappings of wealth. Dr. Sangster was known to get his hands dirty by working with the groundsmen in maintaining the grounds of the college. He was frequently seen playing dominoes with his students or on the field playing footbalL with students.

The Hon. Dr. Alfred Sangster was a one-of-a-kind leader. To his children, I say be strong. Your dad lived a long and good life, selflessly for the people. He was ninety-five years old at his passing.

Nasty Comments and Reactions From a Few People About Senator's Divorce

Dr. Saphire Longmore

I have come across many disgusting things on social media, and I just saw another one. This comment can be placed at the bottom of the pit toilet. This is a comment posted on Facebook about Dr. Saphire Longmore that was brought to my attention today.

This author of the comment did not agree with the points made by Senator Longmore about Opposition Leader Mark Golding's role in that skit in which he removed a chain from around a man's neck. Her comments were made as she addressed the Senate last week. I did not make much of the skit when it was brought to my attention. I probably did not make much of it because I am not sure what the skit was depicting. I would not be caught dead in that stupid skit as a party leader, though.

Dr. Longmore's comment in the Senate about Mr Golding seemed to have irked some people, and that is understandable. She even mentioned the question of his citizenship.

To get personal and to write about Dr Longmore's relationship with her ex-husband and to give the impression that because 'a white man dash har wey she now hates all white men', is a very low-down and nasty blow from a man. Remember my friend, the knife wey stick goat wi stick sheep. Tiday fi mi, tomorrow fi you.

Sir, I would suggest you take down that rough post, which, if seen by those who have been through a nasty divorce, will remind them of those hypocritical friends they had before. I was shocked to hear that the author of the Facebook post was a guest at Dr Longmore's wedding. That post says far more about you than it tells about Senator Longmore. We can disagree in politics and probably even cuss off one another but there is no need to go down into the toilet pit.

Politics are no politics; I would have great difficulty treating this intelligent, charming thinker in the way that man treated her in the Facebook post.

Click to view the Facebook post.

Click to view Dr Longmore's speech in the Senate.

Editor's Note:

I noticed that a significant number of posts with suss, hearsay, gossip, and carry-go-bring-come are being posted by men. This is certainly not a good look for us men.

Senator, Dr Saphire Longmore is Someone To Watch

I spoke with Dr. Saphire Longmore today, and she supports the positions of many young Jamaicans. Why mainstream media has not highlighted this visionary woman. I will use this space to highlight her positions on matters of national interest.

There are some of our politicians we must pay attention to. Dr. Longmore is one such politician.
