US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's Visit To The Caribbean

Some Jamaicans have been very skeptical about the visit of the US Secretary of State to Jamaica, Guyana, and Suriname. One of the official reasons for the Secretary of State to visit several islands is because it is believed that meeting officials face-to-face and being in the countries gives a better feel of things.

I have heard commentators on the radio stating that the US does not care for Caribbean people. It is not a matter of caring; it is a matter of national interest. Whatever the US wants to do or say, the Caribbean region cannot be ignored. I don't think we will be annexed to the US.

This Wednesday and Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Jamaica, Guyana, and Suriname.  While in Jamaica, the Secretary will also meet bilaterally with heads of state from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti.

US leaders know that when the Caribbean region prospers, the US also prospers. It is not in the interest of the US to have economically challenged countries as their neighbours. Haiti is proving to be a headache now for the US and the Caribbean region. Years ago, Jamaica posed serious challenges for the US and other countries when the country was going through a civil war in the 1970s and 80s.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is aware that many Americans have deep connections to the Caribbean and that many Americans live in the Caribbean. Millions travel to the Caribbean to vacation. They are our trading partners. He has Caribbean connections, and so do other US political and business leaders.

I was shocked to hear a very simplistic approach to looking at the relationship between the Caribbean and the USA by intellectuals on one radio station. This is not about caring. It is neither a paternal nor a maternal relationship. It is a very complex relationship embedded in our history, political, sociological, and economic relationships. This cannot be wiped out with the casual wind coming from anyone's mouth.

Many see the visit of Marco Rubio as being about Cuban doctors working here. It is a very simplistic view for anyone to believe that this visit is all about Cuban doctors working in Jamaica. Some are even claiming that the Prime Minister might sell us out. I don't think the Cuban doctors issue is at the centre of PM Holness' mind. PM Andrew Holness could not even dream of telling the Cuban doctors to pack their bags and go home. He might do so, if the US were replacing Cuban doctors with US doctors at a cheaper rate.

It is interesting to note that in a meeting of US officials to discuss the Secretary of State's visit, the Caribbean was described as the US's third border. Marco Rubio has much to discuss. There is the challenge of narcotics, international criminals, the Caribbean as a shipping route, dealing with energy, and other things. Will he remember the Cuban doctors?  More anon on that one.

Let us welcome Marco Rubio and his official delegation to our beautiful island. We must understand that Trump or no Trump, the US is our neighbour and our friend, although we do not always agree with them. Don't forget, President Trump will not have eternal life.

Decreasing Number of Undocumented Person Hurting Florida

Many of us are aware that many businesses in Florida depend on cheap labour provided by undocumented aliens to provide cost-effective services. Americans are not willing to do jobs that many undocumented people are willing to do. This is now posing a challenge in Florida on media house reports.

The solution is to change the laws to enable businesses to use child labour. I wonder which is worse morally? Use undocumented people or use child labour?

Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state legislature and their potential solution to use child labour is a dangerous one.

Getting rid of undocumented workers could help to push inflation up if employers have to pay Americans higher pay for work now being done by undocumented workers.

You could end up with a workforce with a significant amount of children, and that could result in relationship issues and also impact work attitude.

Breaking News - Situation Escalates at St James High School

The reports from St. Jame High School indicate that several teachers have called in sick. I have been unable to ascertain if the teachers are taking industrial action or not. One report said that the principal, Joseph Williams, has to be visiting various classes trying to maintain order in the school.

If the attendance of teachers continues to decline during this week, then the lack of supervision could pose a serious risk for the students.

The Minister of Education, The Honourable, Dr. Dana Morrison, Senator, needs to act now. External examinations are just around the corner, and the challenges that the organization is facing at this time could have an adverse impact on the students' performance.

St. James High School Needs Your Support - A School Supporting Poor Rural Children

St. James High School is one of those schools where I have been told the teachers and administration have worked hard to maintain discipline and improve students' performance. Their hard work is now paying off. Their students are doing better these days, and many parents are anxious to get their children into the school.

Jamaicans would be alarmed and shocked to hear about the challenges that are affecting the school. These challenges have more to do with personalities and persons who do not have a clue about leading an educational institution.  It's more about power and more power. Jamaicans have to ensure that it is not just about academic qualifications and money; it is also about having persons who are properly socialized to be on school boards.

Now more than ever, every Jamaican needs to protect this rock because we are no longer welcomed in other places.

The Challenges At St. James High Continue

It is shocking, scandalous, and unbelievable that the problems at St. James High School in St. James continue. I was advised that this morning, workers reported for work and found the gate to the school padlocked. Is it a coincidence that this happened after confirmation that the board would continue with the same administration?

You cannot ask pus to guard butter. Di same pus wi nyam di butter. You cannot ask John Crow and Pechary to be in charge of anything. They will always be fighting against one another.

Nothing has changed.  The same board, the same administration, and the same war. The children will suffer, and taxpayers' funds will continue to be wasted. May the good Lord help us to acquire some common sense.

It is time for the minister to act decisively. There are challenges between the chairman and board members, the chairman and the principal. The children continue to pay the hefty price for all of this nonsense. It's a fight for power, which taxpayers will pay for. May the good Lord help us!

If the problem was at Campion College, Immaculate Conception High School, or Jamaica College, the matter would already be resolved. Who cares for these rural children at a so-called non-traditional high school? Will this matter explode and become a topic for the approaching elections?

Is this segregation in education?
