Shocking Recommendation By UWI Lecturer!

I heard a news item on TVJ News this evening, September 17, 2026, reporting that a UWI professor wrote a recommendation for a Jamaican to be sent to the US authorities. I've been told that when you write a recommendation for someone, you are also writing one for yourself.

While one should be concerned about who a UWI professor writes a recommendation for, one must also ask, “Is it the policy of the university to allow its staff members to use its letterhead for writing recommendations and other non-UWI business?” 

Writing a recommendation for someone seems to be a personal act. A positive recommendation for a questionable character using the UWI's letterhead could implicate the reputation of the UWI.

The UWI must issue a statement on this matter if what is stated in the news is correct. If the university remains silent, then people will start to speculate. Is there a business going on at the UWI to recommend people and to give the impression that the recommendation is endorsed by the university?

My readers will recall that I wrote an article expressing concerns about the University Hospital of the West Indies some years ago. I have concerns about the UWI now.

There is no electricity service in Newton District in St. Elizabeth. They have been without power since after 2 pm yesterday.

Residents are complaining that items valuing significant amount of cash will spoil.

The Dam Disgrace at Mona and Hermitage

Have we taken a serious look at the state of our dams?

The Mona Dam was built in 1944 with a capacity of about 800 million gallons. It was desilted only once, between 1974 and 1976, when it was already 30% silted. That was 50 years ago. Today, estimates suggest it could be 60% to 70% silted.

At full capacity, we may now have less than 300 million gallons of usable water. That is why we are seeing water lockoffs even during the rainy season.

When was the last bathymetric survey done on Jamaica’s two major facilities, Mona and Hermitage? Without current data, we are managing blind.

Desilting our dams every 10 to 15 years would be far less costly in terms of equipment, manpower, and shutdown time. Shorter, planned shutdowns are far better than the long, emergency lockoffs citizens endure now.

If we addressed this, water lockoffs could become a thing of the past.  

Right now, it is a national disgrace and a symptom of gross incompetence.

PNP - Table Full MOU On Third Country Nationals

The People's National Party (PNP) is demanding that the Government immediately table the full Memorandum of Understanding on Third Country Nationals (TCN) in Parliament. The Government's latest "update" confirms it is pressing ahead while still refusing to tell Jamaicans what they are being exposed to.

The joint statement from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and National Security and Peace announces finalised operating procedures and guardrails, yet discloses none of them. It does not say how many foreign nationals will enter Jamaica, where they will be housed, how long they will stay, who is paying, or how criminal records will be verified.

Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Fitz Jackson, MP, said: "This is not an update. It is an announcement that the Government has decided and the people will be told nothing. Jamaicans are being asked to trust a secret agreement that touches their security, their communities and their public services."

Mr Jackson continued: "Around the world, these arrangements have been marked by hidden payments and weak oversight. Once again, this Government has shown an autocratic disregard for Parliament and for the people's right to know. This is a further erosion of our democratic traditions."

The PNP calls on the Government to publish the MOU and its operating procedures, disclose all funding sources and any benefit to Jamaica,  explain the vetting process, and state what happens to the TCNs if the ten asylum applications that trigger suspension are received. Parliament must debate the agreement before any TCN arrives.

"Jamaicans must not tolerate this growing pattern of bullying by the Government. Silence is not governance," Mr Jackson added.

Ensuring Road Is Fixed After NWC Broken Main Is Fixed

 I received this message, which I now share with you.

On a complimentary note, I must mention that on Hope Rd, just above the Bob Marley Museum, both sides were dug up (for either JPS or NWC lines), then covered with dirt; but within 2 days, NWA excellently resurfaced it.

Congrats!

Except, many other areas are not so lucky.  They remain for months, damaging cars.

Residents must look out for these things and hold the organizations accountable. Take pictures of the area when there is a problem, such as a broken main. Take a picture about a week later so I can see if the road has been fixed. Bark Di Trute will enjoy highlighting these and bringing them to the attention of the authorities.

No Water Coming - NWC

The NWC needs to send out a new schedule for water availability. In areas where the original schedule for water availability was from 6 am to 6 pm, water is now available from after 9:30 am to about 1 pm. daily. Today, there was very little water coming from the pipes.

It seems that the situation is getting very serious. The acting president should speak to the people and reassure them. People are wondering how much water is left in the dams. How long can this last? The emphasis is on people conserving water, but we need to hear about the dams being desilted at this time.

The dams are uncovered, and therefore a significant amount of water will be lost due to evaporation. Could we put some floating solar panels in the dams to reduce water loss and also to provide electricity?
