MP Natalie Neita-Garvey's Statement On Sligoville Killings

PNP Press Release - October 18, 2026

Natalie Neita-Garvey

Statement by MP Natalie Neita Garvey on The Killing of Two Police Officers and the Trauma Experienced by Sligoville Residents

St. Catherine, Jamaica. October 18, 2026: I am deeply saddened by the tragic gun battle in the Five Mile community of Sligoville, which resulted in the loss of lives of members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and civilians who reportedly engaged the police in a prolonged gun battle.

I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the Commissioner of Police, the Jamaica Constabulary Force and, most importantly, to the grieving families of the slain police officers, one of whom hails from the constituency.

These brave officers died in service to Jamaica. Their sacrifice in the fight against crime will be remembered. Jamaica owes them a debt of gratitude.

I also wish to express my deep concern for the children who were caught in the crossfire of this gun battle. It is heartbreaking that our children continue to be exposed to this level of violence. I have reached out to the relevant agencies to ensure that trauma counselling and support are provided to these children and their families.

The community of Five Mile is still in shock. This unprecedented level of criminal activity is not representative of the people of Sligoville. Consequently, we categorically condemn all acts of violence and criminality. Sligoville is a community of hardworking, peace-loving Jamaicans.

I want to assure residents that I stand with them during this difficult time. As your Member of Parliament, I am ready to support and assist in all lawful activities aimed at reducing crime, restoring peace, law and order, and ridding our communities and our beloved country of this scourge of senseless violence and criminality.

I am in close contact with the leadership of the JCF, and I urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.

PNP Calls For Unity Against Gun Violence

Press Release From The PNP - October 17, 2026

MP Fitz Jackson CD, MP

The Opposition is deeply saddened by the deaths of Corporal Trevoy Shaw and Constable Devoney Rose of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, who were shot during an operation in Five Miles, Sligoville, St Catherine, on Friday. Our hearts are also with a 10 year old girl who was injured in the same incident and remains in critical condition at the Spanish Town Hospital.

Members of the Special Operations Branch were searching for wanted men when they came under fire from gunmen barricaded inside a house with other occupants, including the child. Corporal Shaw and Constable Rose both succumbed to their injuries and a third officer was also injured, according to available reports.

"These officers left home to protect us and did not return. On behalf of the Opposition, I extend sincere condolences to their families, their colleagues and the entire Constabulary. Jamaica owes them a debt we can never fully repay," said MP Fitz Jackson, Opposition Spokesperson on National Security.

"No child should ever be caught in the line of fire. We are praying for this little girl's full recovery and for strength for her family."

MP Jackson urged anyone with information to contact the police or Crime Stop at 311, and called on all Jamaicans to stand united against the gun violence that continues to rob our families of loved ones.

Is A Police State The Answer?

By Michael Spence

Michael Spence

The push for a police republic in Jamaica sounds appealing at first, but it may be a recipe for disaster at your doorstep.

A society that cheers police on for killing those deemed “undesirable” is setting itself up for a brutal and oppressive future. The idea of a death sentence for criticising the police is also a chilling prospect in a police state.

While it’s tempting to think that getting rid of "duty criminals” will solve the crime problem, the reality is that effective crime reduction requires a more comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of crime, including socio-economic and educational disparities.

A police state may provide a temporary sense of security, but it comes at a steep cost to innocent individual freedoms and human rights.

The question remains: Who will hold the police accountable in a police republic, and what checks and balances will be in place to prevent abuse of power?

A holistic approach to crime reduction combined with robust institutions and a commitment to human rights is a more sustainable and equitable solution.

This recent Sligoville incident needs to be thoroughly investigated and reported on objectively.

Let me express my condolences to all those who lost their lives in the incident.

What we do know is that at least 5 Jamaicans lost their lives, including 2 members of the JCF.

Condolences to all their family, colleagues, and friends.

This is where body cameras really would help decipher the objective facts. Away with biased, partisan speculation or innuendo.

A Podcast You Cannot Miss - Crossing Of The Floor at The Clarendon Municipality

I did an interesting podcast about the challenges being faced by the Clarendon Parish Council because a member crossed the floor. This is an indication that our laws and constitution need to be cleaned up.

What's Happening - October 17, 2026

The People's Questions

Bark Di Trute supporters are asking when the children's hospital in Montego will be opened. The Mayor of Montego Bay said it will be opened soon. There is a new building near the top of Mountain View Avenue, close to Hope Road. People want to know what this building is for and when it will be occupied. It has taken over nine years for the new organization to be created, which will replace the CAC and the Fair Trading Commission. When will this new organization be established? The CAC Tribunal has not been set up for some time now. How can consumers now get justice without the tribunal?

People called for a reduction in the rental of floors at Digicel. The PM says a reduction in the NaRRA will impact the performance of NaRRA. It seems to me that it would be a better idea to reduce the head of NaRRA's remuneration. Will Digicel reduce the cost of rental?

NWC

There is another leak at LaVentura off Washington Boulevard. A citizen reports:

Another leak. It has been ongoing for at least a week & a half & there is a stench coming from it. Located near to the pump house at L'Aventura 2a Wadhington Bouleverd. It has been reported & to date the matter has not been addressed.

Thanks in advance if you are able to deal with it.

NHT

This NHT matter has taken a long time to be resolved. The NHT beneficiary wrote to the NHT, and she could not get a response, so she contacted Bark Di Trute.

Bark Di Trute had to write to the general manager. He replied, but there was no action.

I wrote to the Chairman of the NHT and mentioned that I would escalate the matter to the PM if no action is taken. Listen to the NHT beneficiary below.
