Truth be told..the shame and scandal of 'jacket' and 'bun' is a more deeply rooted problem than meets the eyes. Both are steeped in poverty, rape, fear, and overall powerlessness, of the woman.
The recent article in which I expressed concern for the torn and abused products of 'jackets' and 'bun', has stirred up much response from Jamaicans at home and abroad. Surprisingly some of the women who have been silent on the matter, are not sitting and taking the blame alone.
Some women have pushed back and are insisting that it goes beyond blaming them for being unfaithful, adulterers and fornicators.
"Mind the MP stir up ants nests you know", was how one woman put it. There are stories out there if women talked, would bring down some of those held in high esteem and regard in this country. Stories about how those powerful men used and abused their maids (helpers) right under their wives' noses. Those powerless maids had no choice but to give those babies to their live-in partners or husbands if they wanted to keep their jobs, or worse get any financial assistance from their boss for the child..
One woman admitted that just recently she learned she was a jacket for her father and that the name given to her to save her mother's face, was really that her fathers when it should have been the name of a well-known politician and man of power. He slept with the maid (her mother) and his wife knew about it but the wife could do nothing if she wanted to continue to enjoy the benefits of being a well financially secured politician's wife. He continued to give his wife 'bun' and the powerless maid passed on his 4 children to her own unsuspecting husband.
And what of the fear factor of the woman? The stories are numerous also as another woman recalled that when her relative was 16 years old, the area Don in the innercity community they lived, sent one of his warriors (read gunman) for her. He sexually abused her for years as he saw she was ripe for the picking and when she became pregnant, she was warned not to call his name.. but to give the child to her man. Back in those days, and up to now, young girls had their "man" from a very early stage. The Don supported that child financially but wanted no part in getting his name on its birth certificate as she was seen as one of his many side chicks..adding his name could get really complicated.
Rape cannot be left out of the mix. The shame that accompanies this bastardly act has resulted in some men being given the' jacket'. And always it's the live-in partner or husband who has had to wear it, Some children and the 'fathers' end up going to their graves not even knowing that " your daddy ain't your daddy but your daddy don't know.".
"Woe it's me..shame and scandal in the family."
SO BRING ON THE DNA TESTS ...MR MP.... .

ReplyDeleteThis is good article, it touches on a side that most men didn’t look at,and what some women go or gone through, and had to keep silent about...if walls had ears.
ReplyDeleteits time to clean up that messy area of our society.this has no doubt contributed tonthe crime and corruption in Jamaica. tome fir a change so everyone can live in dignity.
ReplyDeleteDah wata deh muddy n murky bad. Not even Jaze can cleanse dis ya one
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem right here, cases/behavior like these need to stop and be exposed. This is not about "stirring up ants nest" and about if you want DNA tests, bring it on..this is contributing to the problem. The MP is proposing a solution to a problem that is very damaging to innocent people. This continuous destructive behavior needs to stop, and our Jamaican women need to be ashamed of themselves, full stop, period. They call men "dogs" but it appears that they are the "dogs"..
