Transport Operators About to get Covid-19 Benefit

The following is a release from the Transport Authority:

Medina Callum

The Transport Authority is in the final stages of discussions with the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service regarding the long awaited distribution of Gas Relief Funds to the Public Land Transportation Sector, with completion of the talks expected by end of June, 2022.

The Authority says the discussions are centered around developing an efficient and effective mechanism for Public Passenger Vehicle operators to apply for and access gas grant, in a transparent and accountable manner.

In March 2022, the Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr. the Hon. Nigel Clarke, announced the provision of $25,000 Gas Relief Grant for public Passenger Vehicle Operators to cushion the rising cost of fuel. The programme will cost just under $600 million.

  1. Wouldn't it be better if GoJ reduce the gas tax? Given the increase in gas price GoJ is earning much more revenue so why not make it a little easier for us?

    1. Not as simple as that though. Fuel tax is the easiest and cheapest to collect and one of the few that catches into the tax net everybody earning plenty money but not paying income taxes. To cut the gas tax they'd have to raise taxes from somewhere else as was done in Barbados where they reduced the gas tax but introduced 3 brand new taxes to cover it🤷‍♂️
