How Are National Honours Determined?

Lois Grant
I've always been intrigued by the process behind the government's selection of recipients for the annual national awards. As a passionate user of TikTok, I've come to appreciate the platform's power to showcase the world's creativity and exchange valuable information. It's a remarkable space where we all aspire to be featured and star in our unique 'movies.'

While browsing through TikTok recently, I stumbled upon a thought-provoking video by Andre Stevens, a brilliant young man who happens to be bipolar. Creative individuals, they say, often walk the thin line between genius and madness. He raised a crucial question about entertainer Wayne Marshall receiving the Order of Distinction. This question resonates with me, and I find myself pondering how individuals are chosen for these national honours.

Is it possible that you assemble a squad of supporters, including family and friends, who cast votes for you, turning it into a popularity contest? If that's the case, what about the three young men who displayed incredible bravery and saved a fellow student's life? They held and accompanied him for miles while passing drivers went about their daily business. Their selfless act exemplifies the hope that exists within our younger generation. Shouldn't they be recognised for their bravery and unselfishness?

Furthermore, what about others who have made significant contributions to reshaping our nation's cultural landscape? Those who have branded and nurtured our music, dance, and sports? While they have received accolades from various organizations, they've yet to be acknowledged at the national level. I'm eager to hear from the Minister of Culture, Babsy Grange, about the criteria used to determine these awards. If it depends on popular votes, perhaps we should consider a national vote where the people's voices resonate, rather than relying on a select few sending in their secret ballots.

Just my perspective on the matter.

  3. One thing I can say for sure is that if someone is nominated they will likely never receive National Honours. That's where the process starts.

  4. If you are not nominated by someone who is known to the committee, you will never get an award. Politically motivated also
