The audience was captivated from start to finish at the unforgettable birthday concert celebrating singer, musician, and saxophonist Dwight Richards at Stella Maris church in Kingston on Sunday, February 11. With over four hours of top-class entertainment, the audience was transported back to the golden era of beautiful love songs through mesmerizing performances by Jamaica's finest talents.
Dean Fraser's soul-stirring saxophone melodies were a highlight of the evening, followed by the smooth vocals of the legendary Boris Gardner, who effortlessly charmed the crowd with timeless hits from the '60s featuring his hit song. ”I wanna wake up with you”. Everton Pessoa's nostalgic renditions of Alton Ellis classics and Peter Tosh's iconic tunes added to the sentimental mood.
Maria Myrie delighted the audience with her powerhouse vocals, belting out hits from Marcia Griffiths, while newcomer Nickeisha Barnes showcased her promising talent, leaving a lasting impression. Football star Ali McNab, surprised everyone when in the middle of his performance he presented on stage dancehall legend Michigan, from the duo Michigan and Smiley. His performance brought back memories of their iconic performances at the historic Harbour View Drive-In dancehall concerts, promoted by Innercity Promotions way back in the 80s.
The concert took a heartfelt turn when Dwight Richards took a moment to acknowledge Lois Grant, the driving force behind the once-popular Tastee talent contest where he was first discovered. The crowd erupted with cheers as Dwight paid tribute to Lois Grant and the contest that launched his career. “’ She believed in me and so many others“, he declared. Lois Grant ran the Tastee contest for almost 30 years.
Gem Myers' electrifying stage presence and timeless hits from Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, and Aretha Franklin captivated the hall-filled audience. The concert culminated in an inspiring birthday serenade to Dwight Richards led by radio personality, Vernon Derby, showcasing his unexpected musical talent.
As the night came to a close, it was evident that this annual birthday concert, fueled by Dwight and his talented friends, was not just about entertainment but also about giving back to the community. It was another successful event where music, memories, and charity intertwined for an unforgettable evening.

Editor's note:
There is a need for the private sector to provide support for shows like this one put on by Dwight Richards. This could take the form of paying for youngsters who are not able to attend these shows. Youngsters from poor communities for example. These shows would have a positive impact on these youngsters rather than some of the shows that are being promoted across the island.
