We must commend the political parties and their supporters for mainly violence-free local government elections. Many will talk about the challenges in Jamaica - and there are many, but our democratic system has stood up well. We became independent in 1962. Since then, every government has been removed and put into office using the ballot box and not by force.
We still have a long way to go, and the world can learn from us. The setting up of the Electoral Commission has worked well. My main concern is that the system is set up to accumulate only two parties.
Based on the feedback that I am getting, there are concerns about the operation arm of the EOJ during the voting of the security forces. Today, we heard reports of police officers not being able to vote. This is major, and this matter should be investigated. Necessary sanctions must be taken against those who have brought the system into disrepute. Denying a man his right to vote is not something to be scoffed at.
I have offered ideas and help to the EOJ, and neither the Chairman of the Electoral Commission nor the Director has responded to my messages.
The EOJ could have done far more to inform people how to check the status of the right to vote and where to vote. I pointed out to the EOJ that the voters' query portal on the EOJ website will confuse some people. Senior members of the political parties were also advised, and they have responded to my concerns and promised to have the appropriate persons deal with the matter.
Click HERE to view the blog expressing my concern about the voter query portal. You just click on the voter query link on the page and enter your information to check if you are on the voters' list and where you are to vote.
Finally, I also set up a system for persons like the head of the EOJ to communicate urgent matters to the media. This would facilitate information being shared immediately with the public. There has been no action in this regard.
Today it was reported in the media that journalists got no response to questions sent to Mr. Glaspole Brown, the head of the EOJ.
Mr. Brown, getting information to the media so the public can be made aware of matters should be given priority. It is said, "Meeting is where minutes are taken and hours lost". We are losing time in this country. Mr. Brown, get it right - communicate more with us or else your time could be short-lived!
No need for this - just vote for your party's candidate and teach her a lesson
