Only Politicians are Corrupt?

Yes, I took time off and I voted.

On election day I wanted to get several things done before heading to the polling station to vote. I was not able to do so because people in the offices had to leave work early to go and vote. Business places started closing early.

The road was jam-packed with people heading to vote. I was becoming very concerned because I expected large crowds at the polling stations.

When I reached the polling station it was empty. It took a few minutes for me to cast my vote. On leaving the station I noticed that the vehicular traffic on the roads was still horrific.

I asked myself. I am sure that people got permission to leave work early to vote. I wonder where those people went? With the number of persons I saw heading home early, I saw the signs for a very high voter turnout. Those signs did not become a reality.

I wonder if when those persons turned up for work the next morning, they had to show their right index finger to prove that they took time off and they voted. I guess their supervisor or manager could not request to see those fingers dipped in the voting ink, because the supervisor or manager's finger does not indicate that the person voted.

Do I smell corruption here or when we do it, it is not corruption, because we are not politicians?

Your foundation fren say a same so. They should have an early and late opening of polls, so people can go vote. Jamaicans are not interested in productivity. The are a nation of party giers and revellery.

Let's say it another way .
People got time off to express their democratic rights on election day.
Some expressed that right by voting ,others by not voting.
Either way you help someone to win or to lose.
re you aware that some persons get monetary incentives to vote as well as not to vote.
Repeat after me "a low voter turn out helps the incumbent".
By not physically voted you have actually elected to all I w someone to win or to lose.
Again "he who has economic power has real political power" .
Political power is the ability to organize your country in your own interest.
Many voters therefore believe that no matter who they vote for things remain the same.
Some say "mi bruk and nuh have no wuk or some weh fi live the day befor.e election the day after nutten nuh change fi mi so voting nuh mek nuh sense".
In a sense these analytical social scientist non graduates of any recognized instution of higher learning sound like very insightful well learned graduates of STREET UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES (SUWI).
Lectures for SUWI you can attend free of cost.

No students loan ,fees or books needed as lectures and tutorials are held wherever you wish. You don't even have to be literate to get educated at SUWI

Streetside, church, rum bar, market, pon the bus, inna bush, pon di bus/taxi,call in programs on radio, political meetings and lecturers abound.
I still hear people say "Mutty Perkins nuh used to tell unnu areedi dat nuh new"

Missa Derby you are spot on with the UWI intellectualism but you seem to be ignoring the SUWI interpretation of issues and the right answers/interpretations can be arrived at by combining both.

The masses listen to you and people like you Missa Derby hardly the UWI people but those in the SUWI space that fully recognizes the at least 4 or 5 Jamaicas existing side by side.
Good works,by the way the election ,who won?

People have disconnected from the democratic process. They see it as a waste of time especially when they realize the nature of the hands that are holding the power or hoping to do so. There is hopelessness. Health service needs improvement, education outcomes are poor, delivery of government services are in need of improvement, public order and safety is challenging the country, community roads get fixed because elections are near... and so on and so on,,..... More hopelessness ,,,,, and the citizen feels they are on their own.

"whey dem tek wi fah?"

So why not take the time that is constitutionally provided to do my personal business or in a way that benefits me???

Taking it easy is now the best use of time.

Mindset is to get an early sleep or watch Netflix while the reports are coming in as I can read it in the newspaper or listening to the 6am News the following morning.

Apologies if this seems cynical, but I am interpreting the things I see. After all, the more thing try to change the more they remain the same or worse.

Why bother?

Let me be blunt.
Political parties have little political power because without economic power you can do nothing.

The economically powerful class(EPC) has the real power and are the ones that can make enforce real change.
Socialism is dead now it has to be beneficial, enlightened,
progressive
deepened and widened capitalism inclusive of all.

The EPC must stand up, be counted stop hiding behind various organizations like PSOJ,JHTA,JMA etc and declare where they want this Jamaica to go not just in their pockets, foreign trusts and bank accounts.

That 2% of the population owning 95% of the Jamaican economy must become less selfish, more patriotic.

To discourage the selling out of more of the country to foreign people/ entities under the guise of investments.

How about a rule that no investments by outsiders unless in some partnership with the people of Jamaica.

Government for example now proposes an increase in the taxable thresholds of incomes.

A "Jamaica Incentives Act" for the Jamaican people is an idea.Go fir indirect taxes
Under the Hotels Incentives Act you are exempt from paying income taxes and also favorable duty rates on items imported for such hotels.
Level the playing field by eliminating direct income taxes for all Jamaicans.

This is the trend for many sectors owned and controlled by the 2% who owns and directs the 95% of the economy.
When the economy grows it is their sector of the economy that is referred to by international bodies.

More and more people are recognizing that elections are a farce and even your party wins you still have no political power to change or implement policies that have real beneficial impacts on their lives.
Every other person you meet in the streets is planning to go somewhere else thus a "brain drain"

As a result for more and more Jamaicans "JAMAICA IS NOT A COUNTRY BUT A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE LIVE"

Sad isn't it??

Bwoy, we can easily excuse our corruption sah. We are one corrupt nation. We condemn politicians for being corrupt but for everyone else is runnings. A soh tings affi go. No wonder people think it's OK fi tief people land and tief from farmers or fi tief light an water an taxes, scam & fi go inna people bank account fi tief out dem savings. No wonder we are such an indiscipline, lawless and corrupt nation. The sad thing is we can't see how this kind of behaviour is holding us back. Part of the problem is that many Jamaicans no longer benefit from home training so we can no longer distinguish right from wrong.
