Glaspole Brown |
This Local Government Elections 2024, has been historic. First, there was little or no political violence. It was great to see the Jamaica Labour Party and People's National Party members having a party while campaigning. The political parties conducted the elections as if it was a general election.
During the preliminary counting, the losing team celebrated and the winning team were in a reflective mood. One well-known radio show host known as the Usain Bolt in breaking news, was first out of the blocks to declare the PNP as winners. I was flabbergasted at the impetuous outburst. I said to myself that a senior party member must have given him some information.
I became suspicious because I wondered how he made that pronouncement when it was early days in the counting. JLP persons started to panic and I gathered that JLP Headquarters became a ghost town. On the contrary, the PNP Headquarters was packed with people in a celebratory mood. This was indeed odd. I quickly put together some figures showing the divisions that had declared winners. I was now convinced that the intemperate outburst from a well-known journalist and the false alarm report was the beginning of the confusion to come.
There is plenty of work to be done at the EOJ and the first job is to get competent persons to lead the organization. The next step is to ensure that election information is available to all via the Internet. We need to know how much media houses pay for election data and if any media house gets preferential treatment in terms of cost. We need to know what the EOJ does with the money earned from data selling. What else have they been selling? The EOJ should not be an income-earning institution for the government.
Mr Glaspole Brown, you are the people's servant. We need to hear from you.

This is a total breakdown.....imagine if this was a general election with a larger voter turn out.....the eoj is effectively confusing the people with the poor communication of the director....I am convinced he is not understanding himself....in the bad old days of am radio an walkie talkie.with results written on black board with chalk...we would by now know the winner....Haiti here we come....
ReplyDeleteEOJ better sort out themselves before the general elections or there is going to be total chaos
ReplyDeleteYes they need to get themselves together & sorted out before general election👹
ReplyDeleteSomething totally wrong and it need to be fix
ReplyDeleteCliff Hughs was the one who made that announcement on TV . I was watching other media outlets too and they did not make any call on who won the election. I am still wondering why he made that early call.
ReplyDeleteThe confusion was not caused by Mans and mans or womans at EOJ.
ReplyDeleteOne Huge s exuberant media house couldn't wait on the updated information apparently jumped the information gun resulting in false news.
This media house paid for direct on time feeds but the sustenance of communication failed somewhat.
Such news network should get back their money and or file a suit for reputational damages.
The EOJ should then suit the internet/communication provider for reputational damage.
The cool and collective head of the EOJ Gladstone Brown did his job well in light of the circumstances.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica is still a world beater and an electoral flagship being emulated by other countries.
We should all seek to unite and build it up not tear it down.
The few hiccups can be sorted out as they consider incorporating more reliable satellite communication feeds as backup, instead of total reliance on our call dropping "poor connection" systems.
The key judgement point is that in the final analysis the 17th local government elections in Jamaica was impenetrably free and fair.
I went to vote, the EOJ personnel were professionally
knowlegeable and competent.
My voting experience was good.
I recommend all citizens of voting age to exercise their democratic voting rights.
Do not allow this experience to go to waste.
Parents, teachers, parsons, schools, colleges media personell, social media and other influencers to encourage and expose the younger generation to this important democratic activity.
The EOJ should consider having outreach programs starting with schools, colleges,
churches and youth groups.
Many countries in the world still go to war just to change government representatives.
We should not take our ability and rights to vote for granted ,make use of it.
EOJ needs more strength regardless of the criticisms and Big up to the staff and mans and mans Gladstone Brown the Director.
Great job by EOJ - extremely professional. Too bad for rhe network that "jumped the gun" to make predictions and sent out false news.
