This is the story of our Jamaican family which reflects the Jamaican motto, “Out of many, one people”.
My husband is from Northern Ireland, and spent most of his life working in London, England. I am Jamaican and spent several years attending University in England while working in Jamaica.
We met right here in Jamaica where we live, and fell in love in 2009.
We welcomed our son on December 25, 2012.
Our family unit represents a true cultural exchange, celebrating differences and similarities in the way we dress ourselves, how we speak and express ourselves, the things we love to eat, how we prepare food and how we cook it, the things we would never eat, how we dance, the music we like, our sense of humour, the sports we love, and how we raise a child.
Our Irish experience is slightly different than our Jamaican experience in terms of how the citizens perceive/receive our family unit. Generally speaking the Irish tend to stare but say nothing.
Generally speaking, Jamaicans tend to stare and then immediately start talking amongst themselves while looking at us, then they may ask us questions. Jamaicans tend to want to get to the bottom of every situation. This is sometimes offensive, especially since our son is usually present for the question and answer.
But we are family. A Jamaican family. Our circle epitomises,” Out of many, One Love.”

Editor's Note:
When you see this family no need to fas' an wonder why the black boy refers to the white man as daddy. We can be very cruel sometimes and we lack class. I know of another well known couple and the comments of many persons who should know better is, "Yu couldn't be Mr and Mrs ????? son. The child is now a fully grown man and it has affected him even now. Yes, we can be very insensitive.
We must stop fas' een people business while fiwi a spuwile!!!

ReplyDeleteA Lovely story and a real Jamaican story. Blessed Love, Blessed Family.
ReplyDeleteWhen one race thinks they are superior to another, there will always be WAR.
ReplyDeleteRemember now, there is only one race. The human race. We do have many different ethnicities.
DeleteMany of us Jamaicans are emotionally immature. We have no comprehension or appreciation for how certain comments or actions can have ripple effects on the lives of others and we lack sensitivity, judgement and tact. We are generally unempathetic.
