What's Happening - March 17, 2024

SpotOn

Everett Smith

Join me on KLAS FM on Monday, March 18, 2024, 1000 to 1100 EST. when Jamaican-born distinguished US Attorney and philanthropist Everett Smith tells his story of fighting prostate cancer. Everett is a Cornwall College graduate who will hold you spellbound by the gripping story of his experience.  Our men should not miss it and our caring women should listen to his story.

While fighting this deadly cancer Everet continues to assist Jamaicans to pursue their tertiary education and also contribute to the health sector. He is a member of the diaspora supporting his country.

He is working on another possibility now and that is to have a professional group stage their next annual conference in Jamaica.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for that one.

Nadine Williams

Nadine Williams our agricultural prices analyst will join me after to give us the latest food prices at the Coronation Market. You cannot afford to miss her delivery - it is full of fun, and wit as she takes you to the Coronation Market and also provide you with feedback from our farmers.

SpotOn With Vernon Derby is the only programme of its kind in Jamaica.

Guns Barking

I just got a recording from one of My On The Ground Reporters with a barage of gunshots reported to be in Denham Town. This has not been confirmed by the police.

Click on the icon below to hear the gunshots:

Emancipation Park Needs to be Emancipated from Vendors

There is a new Commissioner of Police, there is a new Mayor and there is a police post a few meters away from Emancipation Park in New Kingston. They destroyed the park downtown and Emancipation Park is next in line and eventually the whole business district will be destroyed. Who will want to stay at a hotel where nearby the streets are taken over by illegal vendors and also criminal elements. Once again, who is in charge?

If we cannot run things then the gangs might start to run things. It is happening in Haiti and it can happen here too.  If decent people sit back and do nothing then anything is possible.

Note:

I went through a very serious period of illness over the past few days. I am trying my best to fight it. I will be making another trip to the doctor this week. That's why I was missing in action for a few days. I appreciate those who checked up on me. I love you and I appreciate your concerns. I note your warnings and advice!

  3. RM Toronto. We wish you a speedy recovery from your recent illness, sir D.
In regards to the gun shots, I surmise that there are many people in that community who knows who are responsible for what is taking place.
The politicians are possible in their beds sleeping.
The police might have been called by someone in the community.
So until such time as the Jcf is able to BUILD SOME TRUST INTO THE LAW ABIDING CITIZENS, THIS WILL CONTINUE.
A successful police force is one that is able to get the help from the citizens.
And one of the things that is being overlooked by all of the pundits out there is the fact that people have very little trust in giving information to the police.
Not knowing weather or not if said info will reach the wrong person, that might result in them loosing their lives.
This is one of the major task that's facing the new commissioner.
They have to weed out the corrupt members among them who are destroying the trust that is imperative for them to to get the help that is so needed.
We all love to live no matter if you resides in cherry gardens or the ghettos of kingston.
When you have members of the jcf being implemented as gang members, who is going to willingly tell what they know, not knowing if the said person that you are giving the info is not one of those who are involved in what is taking place.
The citizens themselves must stop the practice of bribing the police, and then complain about the corruption in the police force.
And we could start off by not reaching for our wallets and our handbags to pay our way out of a traffic offense.
Because what we are doing is we are pouring gasoline on the fire that is already burning.
We the citizens can do a lot to improve the current situation.
But the question is, how many are willing to do what it takes?

    1. Well! However; it would be very good whenever we are pull over for no obvious reasons and when no grease palm is not working out for some of these greedy cops. Then they brand us with a ticket that is very illegal and because our justice system does not Gives justice speedily. Most people just comply with the level of corruption going on in this country. The government needs to fix the justice for suit the poor of this country and not for the rich and famous.

  6. We are seeing a little bit of the government hand at work. However; gun men's are still going around robbing whoever, Where ever they want to rob. Seems like, we no do not know how to monitor our little country and yet we have so much electronic devices in the Jamaican do what. The government needs to start give the young men who are not working to plant up land and sell back to over Seas market and to those who does not have anyone to really help them. The government needs to pay attention to details. If not he might just lost out. Get serious and put the right measures in place to get these organize crime to see that evil is not the way out.
