Jamaica has about 430 miles of beach but Jamaicans have no more than approximately 3 miles of access.
Oh! I just recalled Emancipation or is it De-Emancipation and an Unindependence at work.
The descendants of slaves are 98% of the population and they own no more than 5% of the economy.
A small 2% of the population owns 95%. Real Emancipation and Independence for the masses is a work in progress.
Real estate matters but a third of the population is still squatting. In 1838 approximately 400,000 slaves became squatters.
Eliminate squatting.

In that article a typo error it should be "in 1838 appr 400,000 slaves became squatters" not 1938.
ReplyDeleteIndeed the beaches should be accessible to residents. The issue is they are privately own now and the owners do not want non-guest residents squatting on their shores and sand. This arrangement needs to be revisited. After all, not too long ago residents could access almost any beach.
DeleteUpon "emancipation", the slaves were not given land or any other assets so they had to squat. So much for freedom. More like they were thrown off the plantations. Sad.
Yes, they were thrown off the plantation and left to fend for themselves. The dominance of the plantocracy continues in all aspects of life even to this day. As we often say the more things change the more they remain the same.
