JTA President Visits Holland Bamboo Primary In Trelawny and NEA President From the USA, Princess R Moss, Makes a Statement

Statement from the NEA (National Education Association, the largest labour union and professional organization for educators in the United States)

Princess R. Moss, the president of the National Education Association (NEA)

NEA stands with the Jamaican Teachers Association in their fight for Reformation Now! and for the schools Jamaican children deserve.

For the past week, NEA representatives have engaged in a solidarity visit, where they have witnessed firsthand the urgent issues facing the Jamaican Education system. Nearly a year after Hurricane Melissa, schools remain in disrepair.  Students are learning in classrooms without roofs and in temporary tents. Without enough functional classrooms, students are squeezed into overcrowded rooms, and class sizes are unacceptably high. Despite these conditions, Jamaican educators continue to achieve high outcomes for their students and teach with creativity and passion.

For too long, Jamaica’s children have been asked to wait for the schools they deserve. Jamaica’s students, educators, and communities cannot wait any longer—and are rightfully demanding Reformation Now!  No more learning in schools with leaky roofs ripped away by hurricanes. No more teachers migrating away from the island because they cannot afford to live and teach in their homeland. No more toddlers crying for attention in understaffed early childhood institutions. We stand in solidarity with Jamaican educators demanding Reformation Now!

NEA stands in solidarity with the JTA—your struggle is our struggle.

  2. The partisans are going to attack the JTA and the NEA. The government will soon send out more propaganda blaming everyone except their cruelty and incomoetence for this ongoing situation; which reflects the state of the fire services buildings, the police stations and the trerrible public hospitals. Our genocider adjacent ruler will very soon point out that this also prevailed under previous administrations, as if that makes it right or acceptable. If you cannot do substantially better for our people than our previous victimizers why are you elected? To remind us of how bad things were before you got here while you improve no town center, repair no markets where people purchase foods are filthy and overrun with disease carrying stray animals?

  3. I am 55 years old! It’s a disgrace that some of the challenges that I when through in my time in school, children today is facing the same issues today. Then we speak about becoming first world country by 2030.
