Leaders keep telling us about La Niña or El Niño. We keep hearing that we could have another six months of drought in Jamaica. We know the effects of drought. The farmers can tell you. The lush green hills of the Blue Mountain area are disappearing. We know it could be a few days before we start getting plenty of sediment in our water. It could be a matter of days before we start getting water once per week.
What we need to hear now is what action will be taken to mitigate what would be a catastrophe. The effects of this drought could be worse than a Category 5 Mellisa impacting the whole island.
We talk about taking precautions when a hurricane is coming. What precautions have we taken to deal with this drought? Conserve water? There are many streams and rivers across the island. What action will we take to harness this water? Any decision taken on desilting the dams?
The drought this year is not a one-off phenomenon. We could be in the same position next year. It cannot be just more talk. We cannot bathe with talk, we cannot drink talk, we cannot cook with talk, we cannot put out fires with talk, and we cannot irrigate agriculture with talk.
Those of us who believe in prayer need to start praying, or else dawg nyam wi supper.

They say that desalination is too expensive due to the high cost of electricity in Jamaica. If there is no water and desalination is too expensive, then you die of thirst.
