I heard a news item on TVJ News this evening, September 17, 2026, reporting that a UWI professor wrote a recommendation for a Jamaican to be sent to the US authorities. I've been told that when you write a recommendation for someone, you are also writing one for yourself.
While one should be concerned about who a UWI professor writes a recommendation for, one must also ask, “Is it the policy of the university to allow its staff members to use its letterhead for writing recommendations and other non-UWI business?”
Writing a recommendation for someone seems to be a personal act. A positive recommendation for a questionable character using the UWI's letterhead could implicate the reputation of the UWI.
The UWI must issue a statement on this matter if what is stated in the news is correct. If the university remains silent, then people will start to speculate. Is there a business going on at the UWI to recommend people and to give the impression that the recommendation is endorsed by the university?
My readers will recall that I wrote an article expressing concerns about the University Hospital of the West Indies some years ago. I have concerns about the UWI now.

I see no issue with him using his personal UWI professional letterhead to write a character reference for me,you Chronic Law, or for anyone else, regardless of the alleged criminal offence or the job offer in question.
What is the UWI protocol governing the use of letterheads with UWI logo
for personal output like the one referred to herein.??.
A character reference tells what you know about someone's, honesty,
discipline,
respectability, trust worthiness or non violent nature.
It is a universal fact that crime is an essential ingredient of all civilized societies. Punishment for crimes and rehabilitation are equally important for the maintenance of stability, growth, prosperity and civilization.
I must again emphasize that a crime is any behaviour that attracts a fine or imprisonment. Crime is therefore important for the continued preservation and maintenance of norms and values.
Mr. Haughton, as a professor, is carrying out his duties as one who understands all, if not more, than what is written herein.
If the UWI is in fact an institution of higher learning, I see no problem with Mr. Haughton's humanitarian act as a social scientist.
