The elected government has a country to run, and those who lead should not switch from side to side due to the power and influence of special groups. The people of this country are frustrated with the high level of crime and specifically murder, in Jamaica.
We have murdered over 50,000 Jamaicans since independence. Other countries that did not opt for independence are handling their economy better, and crime seems to be at a tolerable level in these countries. I wonder if being a republic will improve things. The murder rate in Jamaica has increased significantly since the country’s independence from Britain.
Jamaicans continue to be soft on criminals. The last general demonstration against the high level of crime was one that I led from Halfway Tree to Cross Roads over thirty years ago. The church members have had demonstrations also. The lawyers have not demonstrated against the high level of crime in the country.
Now is the time to talk about the victims who cannot even afford lawyers. Each time we hear about measures that give the impression that we are getting soft on criminals. Human rights seem to be more about the rights of criminals than the rights of the victims.
While we can look at making certain changes to the Firearm Act, nothing must be done to reduce the penalties for convicted criminals. Fifteen years mandatory for gun crimes seems to be a slap on the wrist. Those who carry a gun do not intend to plant agricultural crops but intend to take the life of another human being. Some will argue that the moment someone is convicted for the possession of an illegal gun, the maximum penalty should be a life sentence or the death penalty. That is one way of getting rid of murderers and potential murderers. The problem is, you get rid of one criminal today, and the criminal fracture produces another one tomorrow. Let the lawyers give us some ideas on how to solve that one.
I want to know why the lawyers have become united in wanting changes to this law. There must be something in it.
