| Christa Pike |
"Christa Pike to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in 200 years—but her defence says she's a victim too. "That is the headline that screamed across the BBC Internet page today.
Christa prepares to have her life terminated by lethal injection in the US state of Tennessee. Her request is not to have any of her loved ones present when the execution takes place.
It is interesting to note that this crime was committed 31 years ago. Pike, now 50, was 18 when she and her boyfriend at the time, Tadaryl Shipp, beat, tortured, and murdered Colleen Slemmer, a 19-year-old they met at a job training camp for troubled teens.
Pike had accused Colleen of insulting her and trying to steal her boyfriend. Two other residents at the camp later testified that Pike had bragged about the murder before and after, and showed them a piece of Colleen's skull.
There were many appeals, and this has delayed her execution. It is interesting to note that in the Pratt & Morgan case in Jamaica, they were allowed to go free because the Privy Council determined that they were on death row for too long.
My understanding is that even if capital punishment were reinstated in Jamaica, all a woman has to do to escape death is to get pregnant. Pity men do not have that option.
Although the death penalty has not been carried out for many years, the police have shown no sympathy to those gang members and gun members who have challenged them. Eliminating these terrorists must have had a positive effect on the level of murders in the country. The challenge is, Jamaica continues to be a criminal factory. You kill one today, and another is born tomorrow.
May the good Lord help us. Another interesting phenomenon is that communities will demonstrate against police killings, but they are quiet when gunmen kill someone!

This Pike story is very interesting. I wonder how many more stays before she is actually executed. I always look retrospectively at people in this position - when Pike was just born she could have been anything. Where did it all go wrong. I saw this concept in the movie “American Gangster” where the feds were coming to get the gangster, played by Denzel Washington. He was running and his mom reflected, “When you were born, you coulda been a preacher……” and she went on and on.
ReplyDeleteYour comment: "Jamaica continues to be a criminal factory. You kill one today, and another is born tomorrow" is spot on. I have been saying this for years. Many Jamaican families are criminal factories because we have a crisis in the Jamaican family. This here is a root of the problem ( I didn't say "the root" but "a root" because there are other factors causing crime).
ReplyDeleteNow that murders are down, we need to start addressing the crisis in the Jamaican family. Removing the bastard law was a very good thing, but unfortunately it sent a message that it is OK to have a single mother culture. The removal of the law should have been accompanied by a public education campaign to tout the benefits of a 2-parent family and the role of a father. Far too many families are fragmented, and are producing children bereft of the balanced perspective of a mother-father influence in their lives. Even if the children from these experiences don't turn to criminality, there is some level of incompleteness that they feel. Some of them go on to be incapable of having a healthy dating relationship themselves. Additionally, there is a high level of dysfunctionality in our society because of this lack of balance in the lives of so many.
It is full time for us to recognize the problem of the overwhelming number of fragmented families in JA and be intentional about addressing it. Yes, it is understandable if a couple separate because their relationship isn't working out, even if they have children. I believe that after attempts to save a relationship and it's not working out that it is better to go your separate ways than to continue in an unhealthy situation. However, single parenting should be a minority situation and not the norm. Approximately 90 percent of Jamaicans are born our of wedlock. We are skirting with problems with those numbers.
Surprising that it's a White woman and not a Black woman...but maybe if she was Black they would've executed her already.

ReplyDelete*Execute All Guilty Murderers — Male and Female. Justice is Justice, Murder is Murder.*
Jamaica is disgracefully cuddling murderers. Many are coordinating and ordering murders from behind bars in this Criminals' Murderous Paradise (CMP).
Are we aware that in 1962 there were 63 murders? What are we celebrating that in 2025 there were 673?
Has anyone ever assessed the straight numbers which administration was the most murderous and which was the least murderous?
The two least murderous administrations were Edward Seaga, followed by Michael Manley second.
The most murderous was allegedly led by P.J. Patterson at #1, followed by Andrew Holness.
If we want a holistic approach to reducing murders, the Seaga and Manley eras must be studied and lessons learned on how to make the country more prosperous and peaceful.
It should be noted that under Edward Seaga the last hangings were in 1988 — two brothers from Bethel Town in South East Westmoreland — for beating and chopping to death a man I knew only as "BUSTA", a quiet small farmer who was one of the best boxers in the area. BUSTA was never a troublemaker or a thief.
All accused murderers must be tried expeditiously and the guilty swiftly executed.
15 years for a toy water gun will not reduce murders, neither will sentences for a real gun. It is people who kill people, male or female, so execute the guilty.
These ridiculous sentences for a BOARD GUN are foolish. Is a strategy being built to ensure full occupancy for investors in a prosperous privatized prison system?
Now it costs taxpayers about US$15,000 or J$2.4 million per head per annum. A privatized system of PRISHOTELS will move to at least US$30,000 or J$4.8 million per man/woman per annum.
Now you understand why America would sublet prisoners to places like El Salvador or Jamaica with low rates. America's rates average about US$68,000 and can go as high as US$168,000.
The Prishotel Tourism Model (PTM) is being developed, so think about it: the Third Country Nationals (TCN) deportee model could be adapted to Third Country Prisoners (TCP) — a potentially good foreign exchange earner.
Afro, Caucasian,Asian male, female or other the guilty must be executed rapidly in an effort to.preserve civilization.of humankind among animals, plants, fish, bird and insects.
ReplyDeleteWe need to ask ourselves why this small country is so adept at churning out murderers like an assembly line. Let's get to the root of the problem. Whilst I'm not against capital punishment, it doesn't get to the root of the problem and simply addresses the symptoms.
