This is another talented artiste which the Jazz & Cabaret In The Gardens team has selected to be in the line-up. This Jamaican-based gospel singer and songwriter will give you that soulful feeling and has a smooth voice. She will deliver those bluesy notes that will lift your spirit in that beautiful garden setting at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

An Enchanting Evening at The British High Commission in Kingston Jamaica - Screening of 'Small Island'.

The British High Commissioner, for Jamaica, Judith Slater, invited a few guests to screen the film of the play, Small Island by Andrea Levy. This was on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

The film takes an interesting look at the Windrush phenomenon of people from the Caribbean leaving for England after World War II. In a very creative and interesting way, the play looks at the movement of black people from Jamaica to the motherland. Many went to Britain hoping for a better life. They had a rude awakening when they experienced certain challenges.  Britain needed these people to assist in building their country after the war.

The play looks at the dashed hopes of the professionals who migrated, the racial challenges that existed at that time, and the difficulty many faced fitting into British society. It also showed the good sides of those in Britain who welcomed the blacks from the islands. There is also the interesting twist of a white woman who had a child for a black man while her husband was away. and was not in touch with her.

The scene where the white woman went into labour and had to call on the black woman to deliver her black child was beautifully handled by the actors.

It was a film of a play, but at times it felt like I was watching a movie. Small Island is not just a play; it's history; it's about the sociological challenges at the time and a clash of cultures.

We were delighted to hear a few Jamaican folk songs in the play.

It was an evening well spent, especially for those who had a few beers or sipped some wine while watching the film. The British High Commissioner's majestic-looking residence is situated on well-laid-out grounds and well-manicured lawns. The building is a work of art accented by the lovely latticework. It's a reminder of the great houses that once dotted our landscape during the colonial days.

Prime Minister's Budget Speech 2025

This is the election year 2025, and Prime Minister Andrew Holness made his presentation on Thursday, March 20. The PM seemed ready for battle with the PNP. Although this election will be a peaceful battle, it will be deadly.

There was confusion with the caption on the TVJ screen during the PM's budget speech.

What does 'MT' stand for? It is the first time I have seen that abbreviation. I believe the national title should come first. The PM should therefore be addressed as The Most Honourable, Dr Andrew Holness, ON, PC, MP. The doctorate is just a degree from a university, and that should not come before the national title.

The caption was changed subsequently to Dr The Most Honourable Andrew Holness, ON, PC, MP.

This is the year of goodies and also changes. Add your comments as to what you think about the Prime Minister's budget presentations.

Judi Emanuel - The Singer Who Knocks Them Off Their Feet.

'Dem lickle but dem tallawah!' When you hear that phrase, it could only be describing one place: Jamaica. This island, small in size, but mighty in talent, has gifted the world with yet another extraordinary voice—a voice so sweet it’ll make the birds stop and listen. We’re talking about Judi Emanuel, Jamaica’s very own Soul-Reggae Countess. Hailing from Jamdung, she’s one of the brightest stars to emerge on the entertainment scene. Judi is not just a recording artist; she’s also an author, adding yet, another dimension to her creative brilliance.

Judi’s musical range is as impressive as her voice. She has an extensive repertoire that spans original compositions as well as covers of other artists’ hits. Whether it’s reggae, jazz, soul, gospel, or even classical music, Judi moves seamlessly through these genres, captivating audiences with ease. One moment, she’ll have you grooving to reggae rhythms, and the next, she’ll take you on an emotional journey through the soulful depths of music, all while lifting your spirit with the gospel and soothing your soul with a bit of jazz.

Her musical journey began in basic school and blossomed in high school when she and her two sisters formed the singing group Emanuel Sisters. You might remember their entry into the National Song Contest with the song 'We're Proud', which made it into the top ten in 1983. The song written by the legendary iconic Mento musician Count Owen—Judi’s father—is a testament to the musical legacy that runs through her veins.

After taking a break from the Emanuel Sisters, Judi took on the challenge of a solo career and quickly made her mark on Jamaica’s music scene, performing at some of the top hotels along the north coast.

Judi Emanuel has toured internationally with former member of the I-Threes, Judy Mowatt. She has also worked on albums including Disney's Little Mermaid, and with artistes such as Gregory Isaac, Jimmy Cliff, Toots Hibbert, and Judy Mowatt.

Now, catch Judi Emanuel as she graces the stage at Jazz & Cabaret in the Gardens on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Alongside other talented Jamaican artists, she’ll perform with the internationally acclaimed, award-winning band, Fab 5. This is a show you won’t want to miss.

Is There Something Fishy Going On?

Contributed

The killing chemical that poisons the fish or is blocking oxygen to the fish is not being disclosed. I would like to know if it's a carcinogenic substance, CADMIUM that causes prostatate and breast cancer.

Cadmium occurs naturally in bauxitic soils, and more is added during the bauxite processing and released as waste.

Prostate cancer in Jamaica is highest in bauxite areas, St. Catherine and Kingston.

I need to know the offending substances. No more nondisclosure agreements with these corporate entities like WINDALCO.
