Woman To To Receive Capital Punishment In The USA

"Christa Pike to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in 200 years—but her defence says she's a victim too. "That is the headline that screamed across the BBC Internet page today.

Christa prepares to have her life terminated by lethal injection in the US state of Tennessee. Her request is not to have any of her loved ones present when the execution takes place.

It is interesting to note that this crime was committed 31 years ago. Pike, now 50, was 18 when she and her boyfriend at the time, Tadaryl Shipp, beat, tortured, and murdered Colleen Slemmer, a 19-year-old they met at a job training camp for troubled teens.

Pike had accused Colleen of insulting her and trying to steal her boyfriend. Two other residents at the camp later testified that Pike had bragged about the murder before and after, and showed them a piece of Colleen's skull.

There were many appeals, and this has delayed her execution. It is interesting to note that in the Pratt & Morgan case in Jamaica, they were allowed to go free because the Privy Council determined that they were on death row for too long.

My understanding is that even if capital punishment were reinstated in Jamaica, all a woman has to do to escape death is to get pregnant. Pity men do not have that option.

Although the death penalty has not been carried out for many years, the police have shown no sympathy to those gang members and gun members who have challenged them. Eliminating these terrorists must have had a positive effect on the level of murders in the country. The challenge is, Jamaica continues to be a criminal factory. You kill one today, and another is born tomorrow.

May the good Lord help us. Another interesting phenomenon is that communities will demonstrate against police killings, but they are quiet when gunmen kill someone!

Healthcare Workers To Arrive In Jamaica From Africa

The Ministry of Health & Wellness will welcome the first group of Ghanaian healthcare workers to Jamaica as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system and deliver quality healthcare services.  

The State Minister of Health & Wellness, the Hon. Krystal Lee, MP, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith, will meet the healthcare workers.

The plaza barrier breaks a car windscreen

I received a report this afternoon, September 26, that one of Bark Di Trute's writers had his windscreen damaged by a barrier in the plaza. This happened at the Liguanea Plaza in Kingston. The security person on duty refused to give her name to the motorist whose windscreen was broken. Our writer reports that the guard works for King Alarm.

The owners of the plaza should meet with the motorist and come to an understanding as to how the motorist will be compensated. The security guard who refused to give their name is not worthy of being a security guard. That security guard should face immediate dismissal.

Funerals

I got significant responses regarding the article I wrote about funerals. There were a few misguided people who attempted to shut me down. That was a dangerous thing to do because to stand in the way of the rights of a broadcaster and a blogger in pursuing his craft is a very dangerous move to make. Those who stand in the way of freedom of the press and freedom of expression are standing on dangerous ground.

Recently, there was a woman who decided to write her eulogy before she died. I wish more people would do that. All the hypocrites attending the funeral became incensed because this eulogy spoke the truth, and many were offended. The microphone was switched off while the friend of the dead woman was reading the eulogy. I wish I could get a copy of that eulogy.

I don't forget those two relatives who went to the USA and abandoned a close relative. When the relative died, they rushed to Jamaica to get the dead lef. Nothing was left for them. The deceased left everything to another relative who stood by her. This relative had just lost her job. Wha fall halfa head, wi drap pan shoulder.

Lawyers Demonstrating

Lawyers need to understand that democracy is about what the people want and not about what the lawyers want. It is rare to see lawyers demonstrating about an issue, and this has to do with mandatory sentencing.

I don't know the details, but these lawyers feel that judges should be allowed to use their discretion. Society has a major crime challenge, and Jamaica is one of the most murderous countries in the world. I put my trust in no man nor woman. These lawyers can continue to put their trust in judges.

The challenge is, who does the mandatory time in prison for the possession of a firearm or imitation firearm benefit?

Anyone having an illegal gun has one intention!

No Water In The Future? Dawg Nyam Wi Supper!

While parts of the world, like places in India and Bangkok, are now facing serious flooding, many other places are experiencing drought. We are having a serious drought in Jamaica

Leaders keep telling us about La Niña or El Niño. We keep hearing that we could have another six months of drought in Jamaica. We know the effects of drought. The farmers can tell you. The lush green hills of the Blue Mountain area are disappearing. We know it could be a few days before we start getting plenty of sediment in our water. It could be a matter of days before we start getting water once per week.

What we need to hear now is what action will be taken to mitigate what would be a catastrophe. The effects of this drought could be worse than a Category 5 Mellisa impacting the whole island. 

We talk about taking precautions when a hurricane is coming. What precautions have we taken to deal with this drought? Conserve water? There are many streams and rivers across the island. What action will we take to harness this water? Any decision taken on desilting the dams? 

The drought this year is not a one-off phenomenon. We could be in the same position next year. It cannot be just more talk. We cannot bathe with talk, we cannot drink talk, we cannot cook with talk, we cannot put out fires with talk, and we cannot irrigate agriculture with talk. 

Those of us who believe in prayer need to start praying, or else dawg nyam wi supper.

World Heart Day message - World Heart Day Is Tuesday September 29

CHAIRMAN OF THE HEART FOUNDATION OF JAMAICA

“Heart Disease can hide in plain sight- Don’t Miss A Beat”. This is the theme for World Heart Day 2026. The message couldn’t be clearer. Heart Disease, which includes heart attacks and heart failure syndromes, is responsible for 30% of deaths worldwide. This is an urgent call for all persons to take responsibility for their health. Screening for the causes of heart disease is an effective way to reduce your risk for developing heart disease. Common conditions like hypertension (detected in > 30% of Jamaican adults) and diabetes may not be readily apparent in terms of how you feel but may already be setting the stage for later development of significant heart disease. Early detection and management of these common, chronic conditions can reduce your risk and prolong your life.

You may also reduce your risk of developing these conditions by measures which you can start on your own with simple guidance. Adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the first step. What does this look like? This includes attaining and maintaining a healthy weight, adhering to a diet low in salt, sugar, fat and cholesterol and enriched with healthy fats, peas and beans, vegetables and high-quality protein. Don’t practise fad diets. Take your guidance from reliable science-based sites and consult with your medical practitioner and nutritionist. You should be exercising regularly,

whether you are overweight or not, to improve the health and function of your blood vessels and heart. Well-conditioned muscles, including your heart muscle, will improve your overall level of functioning and for older individuals will help you to remain functional and independent for a longer time.

If you have been found to have a chronic condition such as hypertension and diabetes, take heed of this and do all you can to control this well. This would mean taking prescribed medication as recommended, not missing doses or taking the medication only when you feel ill and having regular follow-up visits with your medical practitioner to monitor your progress and control. If these conditions are well-controlled, you have a greater chance of avoiding or delaying development of heart disease.

Lastly, be your own advocate! Speak up and lobby for improved facilities for exercise in public spaces, for improved healthcare facilities and for regulations which will compel suppliers to provide healthier dietary choices. Tell the authorities that you want to be able to make the right dietary choices and therefore need clear and effective food labelling, which should be mandatory for all processed foods sold in our country.

It is time for you as individuals to take responsibility for your own health. The heart is the engine which drives your body- don’t miss a beat!
