MORE STORIES..FOR THOSE WHO STILL READ.. DAY 7: OUR LAST DAY IN HAVANA..FOR NOW

Lois Grant

Sunday, September 10, marked our final full day at the Copacabana, and it was a bittersweet reminder that our Cuban adventure was nearing its end. This day held the promise of one last opportunity to explore, shop at the craft market, stroll through the enchanting streets of Old Havana, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of both old and new Havana. It was a day to mingle one last time with the people who had welcomed us into their world, even if only for a short while.

Throughout our journey, we forged meaningful connections and built friendships that felt like they had been there for a lifetime. Bob, our trusty local guide, Anthony, the student and DJ, and the son of our nurse friend, Maytee - they had all become part of our Cuban story. From the craft market, we had the pleasure of meeting Maria and Kevin, whose warm smiles and vibrant energy had brightened our days. And, of course, we couldn't forget Martica from the Caribbean and Latin American Travel Consultants, a friendship that we had cemented during our stay.

Promises were made to stay in touch, and we had kept those promises. When it came to networking, I had mastered the art of never losing touch with people; I firmly believed that we should never outgrow anyone we meet on our journey through life.

As we ventured into the craft market once more, I made sure to capture every ounce of its vibrant essence and the lively street scenes with my camera. Bob pointed out the imposing US embassy, explaining that pedestrians were not permitted to walk past it on the side of the street it stood. I couldn't help but wonder why it was there in the first place.

At a different section of the craft market, we engaged with new vendors, although I found comfort in dealing with the familiar faces I had met before. Nevertheless, I did make purchases from other vendors but was eager to find Kevin and Maria. Maria was absent, but Kevin came to our rescue, guiding us to other vendors offering exceptional deals. And, of course, I couldn't resist indulging in another Cuban coconut, accompanied by a generous tip for the coconut vendor. It was unusual for me to part with my money so readily, let alone give tips, but in Cuba, I had become a newfound giver, never hesitating to show my appreciation after making a purchase.

We stocked up on more Cuban souvenirs, ensuring I left no one out from my list. Then, we embarked on a picturesque stroll through the streets of Old Havana, capturing moments that would grace the cover of any international magazine, thanks to my son, the content creator.

Back at the Copacabana, we began the inevitable task of packing our belongings. However, before bidding adieu to Havana, we decided to venture out once more in search of a new dining experience. Serendipity led us to a charming Italian restaurant nestled amidst private houses. The pasta was simply divine, and the freshly squeezed natural fruit juices were a delightful treat. I cared little about the potential sugar spike; I was ready to savour every moment.

Returning to the hotel, we resumed the tedious task of packing. But for the younger ones among us, the streets beckoned once more, tempting them with photo opportunities at every corner. We let the camera do the talking, capturing the essence of Cuba one last time before we reluctantly said our goodbyes... for now.
